“It's the Science Fiction Writers' Fault” (Interview with Garth Nix)

Play

This week we're probing (with consent) Sean's sometime-collaborator Garth Nix. A man who has penned many bestsellers, Garth gives us the lowdown on writing: where he does it (The beach! Alex is astounded. How does he keep the seagulls at bay?), how he does it (By hand! Alex is further astounded. How does he keep his hand from cramping?), and why writing full time was a trap. We get the dish on what it's like drinking in LA with Sean (there's imaginary nudity involved), on how to collaborate (Amy's taking notes and trying not to get hand-cramp), on moonlighting as a publisher and as an agent (clever), and (most importantly) on how to not to get cross.

Welcome to the Ink Feather Podcast, which explores the worlds of sci-fi and fantasy books through those who bring them to life. Every other week we chat with authors and industry pros about their books, including new releases and old favorites. I’m Lauren and this is episode 36, where I chat about THE DARK IS RISING SEQUENCE by Susan Cooper with bestselling authors Amie Kaufman and Garth Nix.

This episode has been a long time coming, and I'm so glad I was able to finally bring it to life. This is the book series that got me into loving fantasy, and over the years of interviewing authors, I found so many like-minded souls. I knew I wanted to have a conversation about these books, and I was able to get Amie Kaufman (The Illuminae Files) and Garth Nix (Sabriel) to join me!

We discuss myth and legend, Susan's writing, the emotional connection we have with these books, and so much more! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do!

Garth writes some of the best fantasy books out there, and I was really excited to dig into his newest book, ANGEL MAGE. We talked about the creation of this story, including how he was inspired by the Three Musketeers, and mixing iconography with angelic magic. We also dig into writing, drawing inspiration from our curiosity, and more! this was a really cool interview that gives insight into the creative process of one of today's masters of fantasy.
