Episode 100 - Sabriel, by Garth Nix (The Abhorsening)

Dragon Babies

To celebrate our 100th (!) full-length episode, we’re re-covering the book that began it all: Sabriel, by Garth Nix! In between some very involved gushing about Tim Curry’s audiobook performance, we consider the YA fantasy and book podcasting lessons we’ve learned along the way. This is a goofy one because we’re just so delighted to be here - thanks to you all for your support over these last 6 years! There are a few minor audio issues in the first half of the episode where Grace’s audio is briefly lower quality, sorry about that!MUSIC - Pippin the Hunchback and Thatched Villagers by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) - Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Book rec: SABRIEL by Garth Nix

Entirely the Right Sort of Podcast

"Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?" This episode is partly celebration of one of my favorite female characters and partly a series recommendation for the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix. Sabriel is a heroine whose story I have returned to again and again. She is one of a long line of people called the Abhorsen, who stand against necromancers and sorcerers determined to bring armies of the Dead into life. At 18, Sabriel leaves school to find her father, the current Abhorsen, after he goes missing. Armed with a sword and seven bells, she crosses the Wall into the Old Kingdom and begins her search -- both in Life, and in Death. I figured it's appropriate on International Women's Day to highlight one of the coolest characters I've come across! Sabriel knows her power, she knows what she has to do, and she does it. She's smart and determined and witty and strong. Quite simply, she's badass. I hope you'll think so too!  Here's a link to the cover of Sabriel that hooked me all those years ago as a kid in the library!

Chat YA Up!

Join our host Gabi with guest speaker Kat in the fourth episode of Chat YA Up! where we read young adult books and then review them for you!For more information, follow us on Instagram & Facebook and don't forget to check out Library at Home! Our fourth episode is Sabriel by Garth Nix.The Old Kingdom is a place of free magic, necromancers and ancient spirits bound to elemental forces. Who will guard the living when the dead arise?Sabriel has spent most of her young life far away from the magical realm of the Old Kingdom, and the Dead that roam it. But then a creature from across the Wall arrives at her all-girls boarding school with a message from her father, the Abhorsen - the magical protector of the realm whose task it is to bind and send back to Death those that won't stay Dead. Since the demise of the Royal Family the Dead have become stronger and more fearless, and now it seems their forces are threatening to overwhelm the Old Kingdom. Sabriel's father has been trapped in Death by a dangerous Free Magic creature. He urges her to return to her homeland, and to discover who or what is behind this uprising. Armed with her father's binding-bells and sword, she soon finds companions in Mogget, an ancient spirit bound into the body of a cat, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage whom Sabriel frees from a long, magical imprisonment. As the three travel deep into the Old Kingdom, threats mount on all sides. And every step brings them closer to a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death - and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own destiny.SEASON 1:Throne of Glass  by Sarah J.
