EP 30: Vince Papale – How To Make Your Invincible Moment
FUEL with Chris Swartz
Figure out what you are playing for and make that dream come true. Don’t let history dictate how you live your life. You will never accomplish your wildest dreams without trying to break through barriers and grab at the impossible. When all is said and done, you can have the last laugh, just like Vince Papale. This former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver was the inspiration behind the 2006 Disney film Invincible, starring Mark Walhberg. Before Vince’s name reached national recognition, he was just an incredible athlete looking for the right field to break into. After graduating from St. Joseph’s College in 1968 and returning to his old high school to teach and coach, Vince made his dream come true. He ran the fastest 40-yard dash at an open tryout for the Eagles. At 30 years old and having never played college football, Vince proved how much of an impenetrable force he truly was – especially to all of those who doubted him. This is where Invincible picks up Vince’s story, however, his ability to persevere was developed long before cameras were rolling. On this episode of the FUEL podcast, Vince and Chris touch on their shared roots in Delaware County (Delco), Pennsylvania while Vince gets real about how his non-traditional path to the NFL was only possible because of his innate ability and invincible spirit. He was able to push past doubt and never accepted the boundaries of what others said was possible. This was his greatest asset and the foundation of his extraordinary life. What You'll Learn: How Vince went from a fan to the field never having played college ball. Who he says is his most trusted support system and gave him the strength to succeed. Why he believes any person can achieve their own invincible moment, regardless of where they come from. And much more! Favorite Quote: “I've been knighted by the Italian parliament, which is pretty cool. I mean, that's quite an honor. And my mom and dad never got beyond the eighth grade ever – they were local Delco. My father was a pig farmer, my grandfather came over on the boat from Naples at 14.” – Vince Papale Connect with Vince: Vincepapale.com LinkedIn About the FUEL Podcast: FUEL provides an opportunity to look behind the scenes into the lives of extraordinary individuals. His story inspired one of the most inspirational & motivational sports movies of all time. Vince Papale shares how at age 30, he beat “one in a gazillion” odds going from an Eagles fan to a player with only 1 year of H.S. football experience! With relentless training, encouragement surrounding him & focus on “winning the day,” he made sure the coaches had to notice him. He also teaches us that with trust, grit, passion, commitment, respect & love, we can all have “invincible moments!” vincepapale.com
This week we hit the gridiron! We have L'Hospitalet Pioneers Quarterback Joey Bradley join us to talk about the difference between American and European football, moving to the other side of the world, COVID, and more! We also have Mr. Invincible himself as we are joined by Vince Papale! He sits down and talks about the movie based on his life, life after football, what he is up to now and more! Joey Bradley - Bradley is from Seattle (Issaquah), Washington and spent part of the 2016 season and the entire 2017 and 2018 seasons with Poland’s Gdynia Seahawks after guiding the Lisboa Devils to back-to-back Portuguese championship titles. The Seahawks were runner ups in Poland in 2017 and reached the semifinals in 2018. He had signed to play in Finland in 2019, but a rift with the head coach forced him to leave the team. He was nominated for the Harlon Hill award at the University of New Haven (Div. II) after throwing for 2,652 yards and 20 touchdowns in his senior year. He also hosts ‘Living for a Living,’ a podcast about real conversations with real people. Vince Papale- The year 1976 was a time when Philadelphia fans were buried in 11 years of defeat when Americans were battling the lingering effects of Watergate, the Vietnam War, and a sweeping energy crisis. Ordinary people appeared badly in need of a champion from their ranks, and this local schoolteacher/coach answered their call. Vince Papale did the unthinkable and took on an insurmountable challenge making the Philadelphia Eagles. Re-inventing himself from a 30-year schoolteacher, who did not play football in college, to an NFL star, Vince Papale defied the million to one odds against him. Not only did he make the team, but he was voted by his teammate's Captain of the Special Teams and most recently was selected by the fans as the best Special Teamer in the Eagles 75-year history. So incredible is his journey that Disney felt compelled to tell his Invincible story on the silver screen with 'Invincible' starring Mark Wahlberg. Now, Vince has evolved into one of the most sought after speakers in the USA, bringing inspiration to anyone that may need it! Off Stage does not own any songs used in the podcast.
