Episode 152: Top 10 of 2020 -- Kory Quinn, Maya de Vitry, Ben de la Cour, Juni Ata, Nana Grizol, Fern Maddie, Angelica Garcia, Jake Blount, Stephanie Lambring, Shameika Stepney, Fiona Apple

Adobe And Teardrops Podcast

Here it is -- my top 10 of 2020! There are probably a lot of people you’d expect me to have in my top 20, like John Moreland and American Aquarium. While those artists made huge strides in pushing their own boundaries, they just didn’t make as much of an emotional impact on me as the albums featured here. For me, top albums need to both push boundaries AND make me FEEL SOMETHING. These are the 20 albums this year that made my heart skip a beat. Kory Quinn -- “On the Borderline” (Home of the Brave) Maya de Vitry -- “Bread for the Circus” (How to Break a Fall) Ben de la Cour -- “In God We Trust...All Others Pay Cash” (Shadowland) Juni Ata -- “I’ll Try Anything Twice” (Saudade) Nana Grizol -- “Plantation Country” (South Somewhere Else) Fern Maddie -- “Of Song and Bone” (North Branch River) Angelica Garcia -- “Jicama” (Cha Cha Palace) Jake Blount -- “The Angels Done Bowed Down” (Spider Tales) Stephanie Lambring -- “Daddy’s Disappointment” (Autonomy) Shameika Stepney -- “Shameika Said (feat. Fiona Apple)” (Single) Fiona Apple -- “Relay” (Fetch the Bolt Cutters) Send me music via SubmitHub! Send me money via Ko-fi or Patreon. Find Rachel and her comic via https://linktr.ee/rachel.cholst

Meg Williams is the founder of Harper Valley PR but, more importantly, she’s an advocate of the Chicago country scene. Meg backed Rainbow Rodeo, the first (known) queer country zine, so she’s joing us as a co-host today!   Bella did not back the Rainbow Rodeo Kickstarter but she also had a lot to say during today’s episode. (She puked right after the recording, so that may be why.) Jeannie C. Reilly -- “Harper Valley PTA” Local News Legend w/ Mary Wander -- “Relationship Anarchy” (No Boyfriend November) Michelle Billingsley -- “Portia” (Not the Marrying Kind) KIT -- “Good Guy” AND “Stranger” (KIT) Nathan Graham -- “Fake Friends” (Saint of Second Chances) Graber Gryass -- “Devil’s Got Your Name” (Late Bloom) Meg and the Wheelers -- “Getting Over Him” (Bar in the Divorce) Chantal Van T -- “Nicalochan” (Nicalochan) Dan Whitaker -- “A Man and His Age” (Moving on With You) Beverly Glenn-Copeland -- “Ever New” (Transmissions: The Music of Beverly Glenn-Copeland) Kory Quinn -- “Thief and a Liar” (Home of the Brave) Bad Flamingo -- “Bottom Shelf Gin” (Single) James Hand -- “In the Corner, By the Table, at the Jukebox” (The Truth Will Set You Free) Send me music via SubmitHub! Episode 3: Kory Quinn and Mickey Ryan

It was dumping rain one night when I got a call that Mickey Ryan was playing an impromptu show with his buddy Kory Quinn from Portland at Cocina 7, our neighborhood taqueria in Southern Oregon. It was one of those nights - hard to leave the wood stove and the couch. Mickey said, “I think you’ll really dig Kory’s songs.” And he was right. The next day I invited them to the cabin and put a mic up in the room.Kory’s voice is disarming and full of no bullshit. He used to go to gigs via hitchhiking, that’s how Mickey found him. Mickey plays the hell out of a dobro, is steeped in bluegrass and gigs wherever the music takes him.Kory shared his songs up close and talked of the craft of songwriting, The Muses, and his favorite thing about touring.
