Repost: Jerry Kiernan interview

Tackling Sport

We were devastated to hear about the passing of Jerry Kiernan yesterday, aged 67. Jerry finished 9th in the 1984 Olympics, won two Dublin marathons and ran a four-minute mile in 1976. But more importantly, he was our, and many people's, 6th class teacher in St. Brigid's. We had the honour of interviewing him last summer when Jerry was in great form, still speaking passionately as ever about Irish athletics.  We've decided to repost our chat.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. - 00:40 Growing up in Kerry - 04:40 4 minute mile - 06:50 Dublin marathon - 10:40 National championships controversy - 12:30 Balancing running and teaching - 15:00 Olympics 1984 - 19:00 Coaching - 27:07 Working with RTE - 31:10 Lack of Irish athletics coverage - 37:30 John Travers' 13.28 5k time - 41:44 Irish Olympic hopes 2021 - 45:45 Love of Italy and Barcelona FC - 48:30 Irish Sports Council Grants - 51:10 Doping in Sport - 55:07 Quick fire Questions

Tackling Sport

We are joined by former Olympic marathon runner Jerry Kiernan. We talk about his two Dublin marathon wins 10 years apart, finishing 9th in the Olympics 1984, running a 4 minute mile, working in RTE, the lack of coverage for Irish athletics, doping in sport and his love affair with Barcelona FC.  Jerry runs a running club in UCD for people of all abilities, every Tuesday at 6 and Saturday at 10.30.  We apologise for the slight background noise on Jerry's line.  00:12 Introduction 02:10 Jerry Kiernan Interview 02:30 Growing up in Kerry 06:30 4 minute mile 08:45 Dublin marathon 12:30 National championships controversy 14:43 Balancing running and teaching 17:14 Olympics 1984 21:10 Coaching 29:17 Working with RTE 33:00 Lack of Irish athletics coverage 39:40 John Travers' 13.28 5k time 43:54 Irish Olympic hopes 2021 47:55 Love of Italy and Barcelona FC 50:43 Irish Sports Council Grants 53:20 Doping in Sport 57:06 Quick fire Questions 1:04:43 Our thoughts Follow us: @tacklingsport - Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok & LinkedIn Email us: editor@tacklingsport.com
