ETHINKSTL 153: Khalia Collier | St. Louis Surge

Entrepreneurially Thinking

ETHINKSTL 153: Khalia Collier |  St. Louis Surge 18 December 2019 Joining us today is Khalia Collier, Owner and General Manager of the St. Louis Surge, a women's professional basketball team that plays all home games at Washington University, St. Louis. As the Owner and General Manager of the St. Louis Surge, Khalia has taken on the challenge of building the first sustainable women's professional franchise. A St. Louis native with a deep commitment to the city, Khalia is taking the city by surge!   In this episode:   Khalia tells us about how entrepreneurship not only runs in her family but also how she got her start as an entrepreneur at an early age, from selling things door-to-door and cold calling to selling cars for Plaza Motors just to name a few to start with. For Khalia, entrepreneurially thinking means to her, creating a vision that you can scan. Khalia explains how she purchased a professional women's basketball team at 23 years old. She talks about the fact that she is fortunate to have the love and support of family and friends as well as the community and the lessons she has learned in the 8 years as owner of the team. Khalia talks about the trials and tribulations of building a brand from scratch. This includes raising attendance records from 50 fans in the beginning to a now record amount per game of 3000, to earning broadcasting rights and sponsorship dollars, along with being more entrenched in the community. Khalia discusses the importance of women investing in women and the struggles women face in business lending and funding ventures. Khalia Collier - Leadership Beyond Her Field (Owner & GM of The St. Louis Surge Professional Women's Basketball Team)

The Leadership Toolbox

Galen Bingham is The Leadership Strategist. In this episode Galen talks with Khalia Collier, Owner and General Manager of The St. Louis Surge. The Surge is the professional basketball team in St. Louis, Missouri,  playing all home games at the Washington University Field House Complex. Revolutionizing the impact of sports in the community. We build the leaders of today and tomorrow while empowering men and women of all ages by serving as role models and mentors. Our philosophy of recruiting character first, without sacrificing talent, is one of the key factors for our continued success on and off the court. In seven seasons, the Surge has won 5 Regional Championships and 2 National Championships. The Surge begins its eighth season in May of 2019. After dominating in the Women’s Blue-Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) for seven seasons the team has joined a newly re-established league – the Global Women’s Basketball Association (GWBA). The GWBA provides an opportunity for athletes to pursue a professional career beyond their collegiate and amateur successes. In addition, the league creates and prepares players, coaches, officials and front-office staff for future professional development and career opportunities. Under new leadership and team expansion, the GWBA will offer professional women’s basketball in strategic markets to build and grow sports fans in select cities. The GWBA currently consists of four teams, including the Surge and is set to strategically expand in 2020. The GWBA will serve as the development league, vastly increasing the level of competition and expanding professional women’s basketball talent in the United States. In May 2011, the Surge finalized a new coaching structure under the new ownership of Khalia Collier, Owner and General Manager at the tender age of 23. It was at this time that Collier implemented the new model of the program, focusing on the character of the player first without sacrificing talent. It’s under this model that the Surge continues to build championship programs each year, attracting post-graduate players from diverse basketball backgrounds.
