Empaths: How to Stop Absorbing the Energy of Others with Signe Myers Hovem

A Fine Time for Healing

Do you feel deeply tuned in to the feelings of others to the extent that you sometimes have a hard time distinguishing your emotions from theirs? If so, you may be a highly sensitive person or an empath (yes, there is a difference!).Empaths often describe feeling like a “sponge” that soaks up the emotions of others.Today's special guest, Signe (Sig NEE), an ordained Spiritual Counselor, certified Integrated Therapeutic Alignment (ITA) practitioner, and author of the recently published book, “The Space in Between: An Empath's Field Guide, will share how to tell if you are an empath or a highly sensitive person, and how establishing boundaries can help both.“The ability to distinguish your thoughts, feelings, and emotions from those you receive from the space around you is an important skill in public spaces,” Signe says. “Hopefully, this awareness will help you feel less entangled by the energy of others. It will also help you maintain boundaries and a sense of safety in public places.”Splitting her time between Colorado and Norway, Signe Myers Hovem is an ordained Spiritual Counselor and energy medicine practitioner, and authorteaches highly sensitive people practical exercises to successfully be vulnerable, at peace in their bodies, connect to nature and feel safe with others. She's lived on five continents, raised four children, pets, and has a soft spot for playing squash and golf. A good listener, she has a knack for sensing what is not being said.

Outside The Studio: Navigating Being an Empath and Setting Healthy Boundaries with Signe Myers Hovem

Outside The Studio with Tessa Tovar

On episode 43 of Outside The Studio: Navigating Being an Empath and Setting Healthy Boundaries with Signe Myers Hovem Signe Myers Hovem joins Tessa to discuss how to navigate being an empath. They explore what being an empath really means, how to put up boundaries to protect yourself as an empath, and actionable ways for empaths to stay mindful and resilient. They also talk about how projecting onto yourself and onto others can be a form of trespassing. Signe gives a very important PSA that you should tune in for. Signe Myers Hovem is a spiritual counselor, ITA energy practitioner, and published author. Her book is titled The Space in Between: An Empath's Field Guide: https://www.amazon.com/Space-Between-Empaths-Field-Guide/dp/1647423015. “Your sensitivities are a blessing and a guidance” - Signe Myers Hovem5 Key Takeaways Signe Myers Hovem describes being an empath as a naturally hardwired sense of perception that just happens to be in the realm of intuition. Being empathic means you are able to have a larger conversation with your environment than other people. To actualize into the person you deeply want to become, you can try forming “I am” statements. For example, when you see someone embodying traits that you admire and want to have - tell yourself “I am that”. On the flip side, when you see someone embody traits that you do not particularly like, instead of judging the behavior, you can just gently tell yourself “I am not that”.Before fully describing yourself as an empath, make sure you understand what it means to be an empath. Being an empath means having spiritual maturity, integrity, and boundaries.Giving to others without nurturing the self will just lead to self-depletion. You are a sponge and if you absorb too much you become oversaturated. A sponge that is oversaturated doesn't work anymore. You have to find a strategy where you can be compassionate without actively taking it upon yourself to be the rescuer. As for your emotional body to give you space, and invite your spiritual body to come closer to you and imagine a world where the hurt isn't presentYou can project onto yourself or onto others. Either way, they are a form of control. Projections pollute the mental and spiritual environments. Nobody wants to be told who they are or who they should be. Empaths and Highly Sensitive People with guest Signe Myers Hovem

Jump Start Your Joy

Signe Myers Hovem is a spiritual counselor, an energy worker, and the author of The Space in Between: An Empaths Field Guide. In this interview on Jump Start Your Joy podcast, we are talking about empaths and highly sensitive people (HSPs). If you are a highly sensitive person, or if you have a sense that you may be an empath, then I think you're going to get a lot out of this conversation (which ties so closely to this season's theme of intentional comfort on the podcast). HSPs and empaths notice the energy around people and places and things, and this can be overwhelming to them. The Empath's Field Guide, and this conversation, offers a lot of insight on how to manage your energy, hold space, and work with your gifts. In this episode, Signe Myers Hovem talk about: What it means to be a functional empath. The difference between empathy versus being an empath. Exploring what it means to identify as a highly sensitive person. The power of our words and what we choose to call things. Minding your energy, and holding space without having your own energy drained. How to set up strong boundaries with people, places, or things if you feel an energetic drain and decide if you want to get involved further. How do we navigate through the space of being an empath or an HSP in everyday life? Ep. 159: Signe Myers Hovem — What Does It Mean to Be a True Empath?

Think Act Be Podcast

My guest this week is empath and author Signe Myers Hovem, who recently wrote The Space in Between: An Empath’s Field Guide (affiliate link). I was familiar with what it meant to be an empath before this conversation, but Signe does a lot to explain what the experience is actually like. Interestingly there are many people who don’t realize that they have empathic sensitivities, as well as people who think they’re empaths but really haven’t developed those abilities. We also discussed how to distinguish empathic intuition from other things like projection, anxiety, or bias. Toward the end of our conversation I was blown away by Signe’s response when I asked her if she thought Jesus was an empath.
