Jack White

Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

We have friend of the show Jack White back on the show today along with a legendary special guest. This conversation with Rick Rubin is full of fascinating ideas, asides and musical history that let you know just how deep Jack White is. Jack's work and a business ethic is unparalleled. His label Third Man Records has a rich roster of artists and three retail stores. They also own one of the few fully operational vinyl pressing plants in the U.S. which has been working overtime to keep up with the surging demand for vinyl. Jack also released two full length albums this year, and he’s currently on a worldwide tour. After a recent two-night stand in Los Angeles, Jack stopped by Shangri-La to talk to Rick Rubin about the early Garage Rock scene in Detroit that helped shape him and The White Stripes. He also shared potential theories about why the “Seven Nation Army” riff is so catchy. And then he treats Rick and a surprise guest to an acoustic performance of his new song “A Tip From You To Me.” And to cap it all off, we will hear exclusive details about an exciting new project Rick’s been working on, that will be out soon. You can listen to a playlist that includes Jack White's latest album, along with all of our favorite songs from him, The White Stripes, and a sampling of his many side projects HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jack White wants you to revere the art you love

The Q Interview

The way you listen to music is always changing, but Jack White wants to go back to basics. From The White Stripes to The Raconteurs to his solo work, he’s always been extremely intentional with how his music is taken in, which is something you can really sense with his love of vinyl and no-phone policy at his shows. Here’s the thing, these aren’t gimmicks for Jack — he simply wants you to have reverence for the art you love. Tom Power flew down to Jack’s Third Man Records warehouse in Nashville to talk about his new albums, what reverence for art looks like to him and what you might be able to gain by listening to your next album with a similar reverence.

Maren Morris on Taking Inspiration from Jack White and the Future of The Highwomen

Kyle Meredith With...

Maren Morris joins Kyle Meredith to talk about her latest album, Humble Quest, and how it tells the story of her road to success using specifically personal stories in the vein of classic '60s and '70s country. Morris also discusses finding her way to happier songs after coming out of a depression, taking inspiration from Jack White as a way to kick her writing into gear, and adding a little darkness to her romantic musical moments. Elsewhere, the Morris talks about the future of The Highwomen, the supergroup that includes Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Hemby. She also touches on the odds that Americana and mainstream country face in modern music, and how the class of musicians in which she finds herself -- including Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, Eric Church, and Miranda Lambert -- are able to carry more creative freedom into the genre. Listen to Maren Morris discuss Humble Quest, The Highwomen, and more above, or watch the interview via Consequence. You can also revisit Consequence’s interview with Morris from earlier this year, and get tickets to her massive upcoming North American tour via Ticketmaster.
