Matt Shamus - Founder, Driven Capital Partners

Why Sports?

Cypress Grove studios is supported by the Canning Properties Group. The number one real estate team in Pebble Beach and Carmel, California. They specialize in ocean and golf front properties and have been leading the industry for over 35 years. If you've ever played golf in Pebble Beach or taken a run along Carmel beach, you've definitely seen their listings. As their team has grown, they've expanded into dramatic ocean view homes in the Carmel Highlands, and most recently into the Santa Lucia Preserve which encompasses about 10,000 acres with just 300 home sites, a Tom Fazio golf course, and over 100 miles of private trails. If you're looking for a seasonal getaway or interested in moving here full time, be sure to reach out to Jess Canning.I've known Jess for several years and I've learned how complicated and diverse properties are in this area. She'll help you dial in the search to find what you're looking for, and like every great team, they focus on the details, execute at every step and work as a group to provide the best value for each of their clients. For more information about the team and to check out their current listings, please visit go.canningproperties.com/whysports.[00:04:45] One is sacrifice and understanding that being on a team, you are working towards a collective goal, and sometimes that goal is not a hundred percent aligned with your personal goals.[00:05:04] I would say I think there's something energizing about driving towards a goal with a group of people.[00:05:24] For me, at least personally, more so than driving towards a goal on my own.[00:07:16] You become a leader based on your previous body of work. It's not based on what someone thinks you can do.[00:07:38] Sometimes leadership is not saying anything, but it's not quitting.[00:08:16] It's running the last sprints and making sure that you're working hard and the rest of the team is working hard because you're working hard. That's infectious that makes everyone better.[00:08:54] Gaining the respect of your peers allows you an incredible amount of influence either when it's in an athletic context or outside and in the real world.[00:14:43] The moments when I was open to feedback and accepting of other ideas and just coming in with a learner's mindset. Ready to go work. We're the most productive.[00:15:12] I look back at some of the things that I did and I had probably unrealistic expectations and confidence based on the work that I was putting in at times.[00:15:33] If you continue to put in the extra time and dedicate all of your energy and focus on what you want to achieve, eventually the outcome will happen.[00:16:55] You can go do the best you can and the outcome isn't what you wanted. That's acceptable. You have to do is go do the best you can. It's not acceptable not to leave it all out there. It's acceptable. If you leave it all out there and you don't get exactly what you were hoping for, there's nothing really more that you can do.[00:18:57] I think part of being on a team is you have a number of other personalities that you need to understand how to work with. And you don't have to love everyone on the team. That's okay.[00:19:23] You need to show up first and show, what the work looks like, show what it means to be a member of the team, and then hold everyone else accountable to the same standard.[00:24:54] Part of being a kid is figuring out what to go do and not necessarily being told what to do all the time and being prescribed exactly what you need to go do.[00:27:16] My career has not been linear at all. And it has been driven by, what I'm interested in and what I feel compelled to go spend my time on.[00:29:23] I'm thinking about athletics for my kids as a tool to help them developing an improve themselves.[00:29:56] Professionally, I always to have one foot outside my comfort zone. That's, what allows you to expand and improve and grow?

#276: Creating Massive Value in Commercial Real Estate, Converting an Office Building into Prime MultiFamily, and Preparing for Opportunities Amidst the Pandemic – with Matt Shamus

Real Estate Investing for Cash Flow with Kevin Bupp

At the age of 20 Matt got his real estate license, sold his childhood home for a tidy profit, and has been hooked on real estate investing ever since. Matt began his real estate investing journey acquiring and renovating single family and small multifamily properties, forcing value through physical improvements and efficient property management. His strategy has been to purchase undervalued properties in desirable neighborhoods and improve them, thereby increasing cash flow and the value of the underlying real estate. Matt brings this same simple but effective approach to larger commercial properties via Driven Capital Partners.  Prior to his real estate endeavors, Matt spent 6 years at Facebook where he developed programs to introduce the internet to the poorest countries in the world via Facebook’s Internet.org initiative, developed Facebook’s original Facebook for iOS app and launched a subscription business model for video content creators. Prior to Facebook Matt founded two music technology companies after beginning his career as an investment banking analyst.
