Audible Brutality Episode 18: Rob Swift is the Best
Audible Brutality Podcast
Adam and Tim wax deep about our dear friend Rob Swift - an exceptional and gifted guitar player who loves the six string so much he started Galt Guitar Shop in Cambridge Ontario just to be surrounded by them all the time! A pillar of the Toronto music scene in the early 2000s, both Adam and Tim have had the honour of sharing both stage and studio with Rob in the band North Star Jack. As regulars of venues like The Horseshoe, and dabblers in the early days of digital home recording, Rob's talent shows that no matter what changes happen in the music world, great guitar playing and tone never go out of style. There is no way to sugar coat something like this so we'll just say it. Right now Rob and his family need love and assistance - Rob has terminal cancer. He, his wife Sam, and their kids can use support, so please be sure to head to their Gofundme page and make a contribution here at this link. After you hit that, be sure to share their gofundme page with as many friends and family as you can. So along with some pictures from ye olden days of NSJ, we have also posted both North Star Jack albums to our site here for free so you can actually download these to your music blower of choice, and hear what we mean when we say Rob Swift is the best!!!
In this episode you will hear about a few things that happened in the industry involving hip hop artists and surrounding artists, I then introduce another Hangout Segment, this time with DJ Rob Swift, who shares his latest and greatest endeavors. Then the show closes out with a simplified Release Feast. For more info, please visit www.musicmondayspodcast.com
Eggs 200: Revolutionizing the hip-hop art form w/ founding member of the X-ecutioners, DJ Rob Swift
EGGS - The podcast
Welcome back to the 200th episode of Eggs! To celebrate this milestone, we are thrilled to have our special guest, the revolutionary DJ Rob Swift. Born and raised in what would become the epicenter of hip-hop, Jackson Heights, Queens, Rob started his DJing at the young age of 12, influenced by his brother and father, DJs themselves. His education continued on the streets of 1980s New York City where he was exposed to all kinds of music from funk and jazz to old DJs like Grandmaster Flash and Grand Wizard Theodore. In 1991, Rob’s career kicked into overdrive when he joined the groundbreaking turntablist crew, the X-men, AKA the X-Ecutioners along with fellow legendary DJs Roc Raida, Total Eclipse, and Mista Sinista. He also won the DMC east coast title that year. In addition to working with everyone from Linkin Park to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rob appeared as the resident DJ on ESPNU and has achieved an unheard-of level of mainstream success. Today, he is still producing music, including his latest drop, For heads that break, with Shawneci Icecold in 2021, in addition to his popular blog, and education programs which are teaching the next generation of DJs how to master the trade. Here to talk about growing up a kid in 70 and 80s NYC, his incredible DJ career, the effect of COVID on the profession, the future of DJing and live music, and so much more, please join us in welcoming to the show, DJ Rob Swift.----DJ Rob SwiftFounding member X-Ecutioners, founder Brolic Army DJ School https://www.djrobswift.com/https://brolicarmydjschool.com/Credits:Hosted by: Michael Smith and Ryan RoghaarProduced by: Michael Smith and Ryan RoghaarEdited by: Audiostar Entertainment Theme music: "Perfect Day" by OPMThe Carton:https://medium.com/the-carton-by-eggsFeature with Zack Chmeis of Straight Method up now! https://medium.com/the-carton-by-eggs/zack-chmeis-35dae817ac28The Eggs Podcast Spotify playlist:bit.ly/eggstunesThe Plugs:The Showeggscast.com@eggshow on twitter and instagramOn iTunes: itun.es/i6dX3pCOn Stitcher: bit.ly/eggs_on_stitcherAlso available on Google Play Music!Mike "DJ Ontic" shows and infodjontic.com@djontic on twitterRyan Roghaarhttp://ryanroghaar.com
In 2000 years from now, it’s reasonable to think that Hip Hop’s story will be contained and accessible in a collection of texts that are as significant as the Bible, the Quran, the Torah, the Tripitaka, and the Vedas. In our sacred Hip Hop text, I foresee the opening sentence reading as follows:“In the beginning, there was the DJ [or Disc Jockey/Crowd Controller/Cut Master/Mix Master]. For thou extremities, serving as an extension of thine heart and projecting the passions contained within thine soul, controlled the emotion of the crowd, and quelled the collective angst.”I grant you that my zeal for the Hip Hop DJ is perhaps extreme [and even blasphemous based on the reader] but it is appropriate. Hip Hop culture started with the Disc Jockey. And it would be because of this foundational role, Hip Hop would be conceived and nurtured into the global powerhouse of a culture that so many of us have come to support and love. But like anything else that is nurtured, it inevitably matures and morphs into something that is an exact manifestation of its own hopes and dreams. And that is a refined, highly skilled, and progressed version of its predecessors and younger self. With certainty, it can be stated that Hip Hop’s DJ Pioneers hoped for the progressiveness of the discipline and absolutely, DJ Rob Swift has contributed to leading the effort of fulfilling these hopes. More than a DJ, Rob Swift is a skilled Turntablist; a musician of sorts whose instrumentation is a result of his skillful and admired manipulation of sound through a carefully crafted and honed technique.4yrs ago formerly TCOHHL (The Chronicles of a Hip Hop Legend) Radio, D.D. Turner, Stats, & Ish kicked it with the legendary, DJ Rob Swift. During their park bench-esque conversation, the duo discuss with Rob his DJing roots, growing up in Queens, his foray into academia, and a host of other topics. And because we’re sure of your inquiry about the playlist, we’re proud to announce that it’s ALL ABOUT THE DJ.
