Today our special guest is former VFP President Adrienne Kinney who is just back from Western Sahara. Adrienne was part of a four-person group that went to Western Sahara to break the siege of Sultana Haya who has been confined in her home for almost a year and a half by Moroccan occupiers and repressors. Adrienne discusses the situation on the ground, the nonviolent resistance of the Western Saharan people and the brutal occupation of Morocco, and the complicity or ignorance of the western world and the UN.

President of Veterans for Peace Adrienne Kinne describes a hopeful vision while acknowledging this time of challenge and threat from so many fronts. She sees the activism of the youth standing up to, and calling out, systemic problems from racism to science deniers to militarism, as a reason to be hopeful that radical change is coming. She sees Veterans for Peace as growing within these youth movements and the critical role veterans can and will take to make change.

I was never in the military, but I spent some time overseas as a war correspondent for Esquire, Harper’s, and Mother Jones magazines. I was never in a battle or close to a bomb going off. I saw the aftermath—bodies on the ground, neighborhoods turned to rubble, people silent and in shock. The main thing I have to deal with is knowing that a couple times people who were helping me with my stories were punished, severely, after I left. I got to fly home to America and they had to stay there and suffer the consequences for helping me. I carry this guilt.
