Why talking about suicide with my son was so important, even though it was difficult.    Debby Waldman was born and raised in Utica, New York. She has a journalism degree from Syracuse University and an MFA in creative writing from Cornell University. She has been a newspaper reporter, a college instructor, and a radio researcher. Since marrying her Canadian husband and moving to his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta, in 1992, she has raised two children and freelanced for publications and websites including The New York Times, the Washington Post, People, Parents, Publishers Weekly, and NBC-Think. She has also written a half dozen books for children and co-written two editions of a book for parents of children with hearing loss. As the daughter of a man who died by suicide and the mother of a son who wanted to, she is passionate about promoting suicide prevention and good mental health.
