Mike Smith and Nikhil Basu Trivedi – Footwork Ventures (Manager Meetings, EP.12)
On today’s Manager Meetings, Beezer Clarkson speaks with Mike Smith and Nikhil Basu Trivedi. Beezer is a past guest on Capital Allocators and is a Partner at Sapphire Ventures, where she is responsible for the management of Sapphire’s fund investments in early stage venture funds globally. Mike and Nikhil are co-founders of Footwork Ventures, an early-stage venture firm that closed on its first fund earlier this year, which was significantly oversubscribed. Footwork plans to invest in Seed stage and Series A companies with early signs of product market fit and the potential for decades of customer love. The partners discuss their blend of investing and operating skills, and their fundraising process. Before they kick it off, Beezer and I discuss how she discovered Footwork, her due diligence process, decision to invest, and gaining capacity. EP 38: Bob Stephens & Mike Smith, "Celebrating 50 Years with Blood, Sweat, and Cheers!"
Bob and Mike grew up right here in Lincoln, NE. They have been friends since junior high school. They came together shortly after graduating high school and formed Stephens & Smith Construction Co., Inc. in 1971. In the early days, they were considered builder then they focused on concrete flatwork...which then developed into concrete foundations, gypcrete, floor coatings, water-proofing and more. Due to this expansion, it became apparent that if they wanted to realize their company vision, they needed to create a method for hiring and retaining highly motivated and talented employees. A compensation system was devised that was uncommon to the construction industry. They felt that to achieve the success that they dreamed of, they needed to allow employees the ability to not only make a good living, but also to allow for the sharing in the profits and ownership of the company itself. This was accomplished with the establishment of a company employee stock ownership plan, or ESOP. So now we can proudly say, Stephens and Smith Construction Company truly has, “An Owner on Every Project”. The management style by Bob Stephens and Mike Smith, transformed the company from a relatively small Lincoln area concrete construction company into an employee owned regional company that has been ranked by Concrete Construction magazine as one of the top 100 most successful concrete construction companies in the nation. What began as two friends who decided to become business partners in 1971, is now an organization currently with over 240 employee owners. I'm sure I can speak on their behalf as they would say, "It has been a great ride" Ladies and Gentleman, allow me to introduce, Mr. Bob Stephens and Mr. Mike Smith.

Near Death Experience, Mike Smith, Pete Neild, JRP0237
John Riley Project
Mike Smith shared his story about a terrible motorcycle accident in Maui and the experiences he had during a 2-week coma where he encountered God, the afterlife, and a return to today’s reality. Mike shared the incredible coma dreams he had about love and Christ-like people who helped him, but eventually told him “it’s not your time yet”. This experience, or Eureka Moment, has completely changed Mike’s life and put him on a new life trajectory to better understand Christ, his message and to experience the positive changes Christ told him He has in store for humankind. Pete Neild joined us as well since he was there with Mike when the accident occurred and witnessed most of the experience in our reality. #NearDeathExperience #NDI #ComaDreamsReferenced Links:2013 – The ride of a lifetime; circumnavigation of Maui. https://youtu.be/bvmak0AV_jgTHE Trip – Lahaina, https://youtu.be/nNHiDBscMWENorth West Coast - https://youtu.be/wUmeEwFtJ9sThe Turn - https://youtu.be/ecgUdhKban0The Iao Valley - https://youtu.be/BsLXgLTyIcU Mike in the lead 1:17“The Day” – Lookout stop https://youtu.be/dQ7bpRwIIp8OUR last Ride: https://youtu.be/VUbU2OgfJPo The “Tee” Shirt 20 45N 156 15W - https://youtu.be/ucyRlB3EJ10Mountain View Bible Church: https://mountainviewsd.org/John Riley Project Info:Bookings? 122: Always Be Learning & Creating Opportunities - Mike Smith
Work From The Inside Out
Mike Smith still keeps in touch with his boss from Deloitte, his first employer after college graduation, 25+ years ago. How many of us can claim that? We know that most people, when they resign from a job, are actually leaving a boss. Remarkably, Mike's next move was to follow his boss as he became the CFO at the local NBC Philadelphia TV station. By the time he was 28, his boss was elevated to the national network and Mike filled his boss’s shoes. As a young finance leader, Mike felt he was in over his head but the company was big on investing in talent and knew this would be a formative experience. After two years, NBC pushed Mike out of his comfort zone again. They transferred him to Los Angeles to work with NBC Corporate and GE Capital, which owned the network, to work on a theme park acquisition. Mike credits having had a few great bosses who were instrumental in enabling him to grow. He always aimed to make their lives easier, by offering solutions, and not adding problems, so that they would look out for him. Mike cited research demonstrating that 70% of a person's daily experience at work is directly shaped by their boss. Likewise, as Mike has been promoted, he has made it a priority to mentor and coach his direct reports. Bosses have been instrumental every step of the way in Mike’s career. His last boss at NBC left the network to go to the NFL, National Football League, and within months, had recruited Mike to join her on the finance team there. Eventually, Mike became the CFO and in his last few years, he moved over to human capital because of his passion for engaging people to drive business performance. He then founded Huddle Advisory, which focuses on strategic planning, human capital effectiveness, leadership and culture. In this week’s Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Mike’s journey: Huddle Advisory’s mission is to guide leaders and teams to peak performance because it consistently delivers better business results. His approach guides clients to maximize their potential through skilled inquiry, objective analysis, and practical counsel. Mike is also working on his doctoral degree in Leadership & Learning in Organizations from Vanderbilt University.
