Beyond the Crucible
How you think and what you feel as you move beyond your crucible is critical. It's just as important, in fact, as what actions you take to get past it. Michelle Dickinson shares this truth as a corporate well-being strategist. She and BEYOND THE CRUCIBLE host and Crucible Leadership founder, Warwick Fairfax, discuss the lessons she's learned about resilience from growing up with a bipolar mother. She also shares what she teaches executives about addressing the mental-health challenges faced by their employees. Millions of us are working to create a new normal after the myriad setbacks and traumas of the COVID-19 pandemic. That's why, she says, we need to be extended the grace – and give it to ourselves – to realize we are stronger than any circumstance we face. In this episode, I am having a vulnerable discussion about mental health and bipolar disorder with Michelle Dickinson who survived a mother who had it. Michelle candidly explains the toll it had on her and how it prompted her to become who she is today. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression is a mental illness that brings on severe hits and low moods and changes in sleep, energy, thinking and behavior. It's a very difficult for children who have parents with this disorder especially when they have other issues such as narcissistic personality disorders that tend to overlap with bipolar. So how can you get the help you need when you truly feel you have a problem? It's the children who end up with the trauma. Michelle E. Dr. Michele Dickinson spent a long time as one of the only female engineers in a male dominated world and often felt quite lonely, had to work three times as hard, and was often dismissed as the lead engineer on a project. Michelle launched Nano Girl Labs as a social enterprise bringing profit and purpose together to create a dynamic and evolving organisation measuring the business both financially and the impact being created. The magic happens outside the comfort zone, so while inventing solutions for the world, in 2020 when her global tour had been wiped clean, Michelle and the Nano Girl Labs team launched a global digital science solution for schools in 135 countries. Knowing that children make up their minds about science by the age of 12 she knew that her impact would create life long learnings.
