Steve Dawson

Zig at the gig podcast

Zig At The Gig with Steve Dawson Chicago Folk / Americana singer / songwriter, Steve Dawson, has been called “one of the most underrated songwriters in American music, ” who writes, “graceful, poetic songs akin to a volume of great short stories in their precise, exacting wordplay and soulful heartache.” Dawson has released six albums with his long-time band, Dolly Varden, and four solo albums, including 2020’s critically-acclaimed “Last Flight Out” with his folk / jazz ensemble, Funeral Bonsai Wedding. His upcoming album, “At The Bottom Of A Canyon, In The Branches Of A Tree,” will be released on Pravda Records in 2021. Originally from San Diego, California, he spent his teen years in Hailey, Idaho, where he learned guitar and started writing songs. After a few years at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Dawson moved to Chicago and formed the band, Stump The Host, with his future wife, artist and singer, Diane Christiansen. Dawson also teaches songwriting at the legendary Old Town School of Folk Music and co-wrote a book on songwriting and the creative process with Mark Caro called, “Take It To The Bridge: Unlocking The Great Songs Inside You.” Steve's Info https://stevedawsonmusic.com/ https://www.instagram.com/stevdawso/ https://www.facebook.com/steve.dawson1 https://twitter.com/stevejdawson https://open.spotify.com/artist/3qywfCk95QoCCGbbT6NBRt?si=RpcmMFSFSbO6lKX777UjeQ&nd=1

Performance Anxiety: Steve Dawson (Dolly Varden, Funeral Bonsai Wedding)

Pantheon - Home of Music Podcasts

Steve Dawson grew up listening to a transistor radio instead of satellite radio and streaming platforms. And that informs the music he writes today. After playing in Dolly Varden for years and releasing albums as a solo artist, Steve stepped away from music. But after taking a class with Richard Thompson and Patty Griffin, he felt the time was right to come back. Some of the work he created in that class made its way onto Steve’s new album, At The Bottom Of A Canyon In The Branches Of A Tree. But there’s an entire lifetime of stories Steve shares with us, like the inspirations for several of his albums, and how he got the name for his band Funeral Bonsai Wedding, and how he came to write a book about songwriting. Follow Steve @stevdawso on Instagram. Pick up At The Bottom Of A Canyon In The Branches Of A Tree on bandcamp or wherever you get new music. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Rate & review. S4E179 - Stevie Wonder 'Innervisions' with Steve Dawson

That Record Got Me High Podcast

You might not draw a straight line between Chicago singer/songwriter Steve Dawson's (Dolly Varden)music and Stevie Wonder, but when he first heard Wonder's 1973 record "Innervisions" as a teen living in Idaho it seriously freaked him out. But in a good way. This is the sound of musical prodigy 'Little Stevie Wonder' growing up and tackling real-life themes such as drug abuse, inequality and systemic racism, expanding the boundaries of what popular music could be. Higher Ground indeed! Spotify episode playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2mFb9QKQCTEP3OUvITQxzy?si=b648e72d19994898
