I'm excited to be able to highlight Herb Thompson this week as a guest "On The Other Side." I've had the pleasure, like many of you, to read his thought provoking daily posts and I always come away with a thought or even 100! I read his book, Transition Mission: A Green Beret's Approach to Transition from Military Service, was able to talk to him on the phone to start to build a relationship, had him on the show last month during our 1st Transition Talk 2020, and now, I'm honored to have him as a guest!

A Job Transition is a Project

Job risk and change is not something just reserved for global pandemics. People listening to this episode years from now will still face the same reality: going through the process of looking for a new job is challenging, especially if you’re looking to transition from one industry to another.

That’s the mindset shared by my guest today. Herb Thompson is the author of The Transition Mission: A Green Beret’s approach to transition from the military. On the to show with Herb Thompson.

Herb had a successful military career in which became the only person ever to earn the Green Beret and Army Drill Sergeant of the Year award. Finishing up his military career he had doubts about leaving the military and becoming a civilian. The Army was the only thing he knew since enlisting at the age of 17. Like most veterans, the transition process was not easy for him, and he had bad days filled with self-doubt. However, after over 2,000 informational interviews, thousands of hours of internet research, and hundreds of hours of personal reflection, he found his way. He landed a job at a top-tier Management Consulting firm and a seat in the Executive MBA program at Cornell University. In his free time, Herb has mentored hundreds of transitioning service members.

Herb wrote the very popular book The Mission Transition. This book is for military members who are transitioning into the civilian world, maybe now and in the future. This book is not a checklist to follow for a soft landing upon exiting the military. There is no possible checklist, every service member’s situation is unique. What Herb has done is lay out a different approach and way of thinking for the transition. Instead of teaching you what to think he opens your eyes with how to think about the transition. Herb doesn’t sugar coat the process but reveals his failures in transition and demonstrates vulnerability with personal anecdotes from hanging up his uniform. The reality of transition. The hard questions you need to answer. Techniques to be successful. Ways to succeed and others destined for failure.

Herb is also an ambassador of Green Marines.

The Green Marines believe we need stop relying on the Government and corporations to make changes on our behalf. We need to stand up and take account of our own actions, our own choices. Be responsible for our own future and make changes from the base up. This is a generation where the peoples voice is stronger than ever, and we have the potential to make real changes that matter. The Green Marines welcome everyone and celebrate them at their best. We help others get out and reconnect with the planet one micro mission at a time. The Green Marines provide inspiration, aspiration and education all in one place. We advocate and encourage positive solutions to modern life. We believe in small, impactful action and that small steps aggregate to make global change. The Green Marines provide micro solutions from across a diverse community of advocates. We don’t preach or push green values. We don't attempt to create change by shouting, blaming, or indicting the actions of others. The Green Marines are not haters, we are the positive media. We build a community with a common goal and drive to make life better, not in a ‘hold hands around a tree’ kind of way but through micro action, adventure and respect for the environment. We don't talk about all going off grid tomorrow. We advocate bending the current trend away from anonymity and back towards a positive future.

Such an amazing individual

SOCRS057-Herb Thompson- "SF2BIZ: Transitioning Special Forces Skill Sets to The Civilian Business Sector"

Play
Read more

Herb was raised in a poor family in upstate New York near Rochester.  He knew from an early age that he wanted to be a soldier in the U.S. Army.  A few of his relatives had served in the military.  His grandfather was an infantryman in the Korean War.   Herb admits that he didn’t apply himself in school and and that his Father was very lax in allowing him to find his own path.  Herb credits his success to some of his teachers who took the time to mentor him, including his Father.

Herb joined the Army right out of High School at age 17.  Because of color-blindness, he went into Human Resources.  He deployed to Uzbekistan/ Afghanistan in 2003.  There, he had the opportunity to escort a lot of money around the country, primarily to Special Forces units, one-time he helped move move $8.2 million to a main Allied base in Afghanistan.  Next, Herb volunteered to be a Drill Sergeant and he loved it.  He won a "Drill Sergeant of the Year" competition which led him the TRADOC CG, where he did special missions for top Army leadership.  A SF CSM mentor of his told him he should be in the Special Forces and that's where he went next as an E-7, one 1 of only 5 senior enlisted for that class.

After qualifying for Special Forces, Herb was assigned to 5th Special Forces Group.  He had multiple deployments to the Middle East and one "great" deployment to Afghanistan, where he advised, trained and led Afghan Commandos in dangerous missions.  His most rewarding trip was when he was in charge of over 200 Afghans (with less than ten Americans) on a 10-day mission in an area controlled by the Taliban. They survived 3 ambushes during that mission.  On one day, Herb learned an invaluable lesson about the difference between courage and stupidity. Luckily, he lived to tell the tale. After that trip, Herb went on to conducted more classified missions in the Middle East.

Herb started SF2BIZ to empower SF veterans to seize opportunities in business.
