Returning to Self-Government Through Civics with David Randall
The Sons Of History
America's educational institutions, from secondary to post-secondary, continue to perform abysmally in teaching history and civics. In many ways, the lack of knowledge about how the republic works explains why America sits on a stack of massive problems. America's government is powered by its citizens, but ignorance - from voters to legislators - seems to be running rampant. David Randall, Director of Research at the National Association of Scholars, joins the podcast to discuss his latest study: "Learning for Self-Government: A K-12 Civics Report Card." Randall has analyzed many of today's famous and infamous history and civics lesson plans provided by schools and/or organizations. As the school year closes and a new one approaches, this is a perfect time to have this conversation.

S1E67 / Past Is Prologue: Epidemics & Anti-Asian Xenophobia / Toby Chow, Merlin Chowkwanyun, David Randall
EPIDEMIC with Dr. Celine Gounder
"I think a lot of people don't understand how fearful Chinese Americans and other Asian Americans are in this moment" -Toby ChowOn March 16, a gunman in Atlanta killed eight people. Six of them were women of Asian descent. During the last 12 months, anti-Asian hate crimes were up 150% in the United States but the coronavirus pandemic is not the first time people of Asian descent have been stigmatized because of a disease. In this episode, we’ll look back at what happened in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush when an outbreak of the plague was blamed on Chinese immigrants. We'll look back to see what happened in San Francisco, and how overcoming bigotry then prevented a plague pandemic in America. If you're looking to support the Asian American and Pacific Islander community at this time, two organizations we recommend are the Asian American Pacific Islander Civic Engagement Fund and Asian American Advancing Justice Atlanta. This podcast was created by Just Human Productions. We're powered and distributed by Simplecast. We're supported, in part, by listeners like you.#SARSCoV2 #COVID19 #COVID #coronavirus

David Randall on the last California pandemic
California Sun Podcast
David Randall, author of "Black Death at the Golden Gate," tells a story that reminds us that history may not repeat itself, but it often rhymes.
