Jim Harris gives his favorite finds from the show floor @ CES 2020

Description

From our perch atop the Sands Expo, we have a great view of the show floor for the show, but we don't get the fidelity of exploring the exhibits. Even being on the floor doesn't give a full, detailed view of everything on display. It is always a pleasure to get a report on how other professionals see the show. This year, we are joined by Jim Harris, a social media influencer who is always at the top of the CES charts.

As you can tell, Jim takes detailed notes about his experiences, including during our conversation. This detail is how he is able to retain information about the vast number of booths and exhibits he sees. Among his favorite finds on the show floor are some of our guests, including MicroEJ, a platform for embedded devices that allows for on-device apps without the large footprint of Android.

During Media Days, which happen just before CES opens officially, he was intrigued by a concept from Intel which allows a near real-time 3D scanning of an active sports arena. This scanning creates the concept of virtual cameras, allowing a viewer to experience and collection of moments of a game from any angle. Imagine watching a football game and wanting to experience a play from the perspective of the leading edge of the football. This technology gives you that ability without having to change the aerodynamics of the ball by adding a camera. You could also watch the play from any other angle on or off the field - all virtually.

Another impressive technology he encountered was from Bosch, a company known for unique solutions at CES. They have taken the concept of adjustable glass opacity and applied to it car windshields. Using cameras and eye-tracking, the system is able to determine where the sun is in relation to your height and eye-line, and block out a small section of the windshield to improve your vision. It is a much better solution to the problem of sunlight while driving than a fixed sun visor.

Evangelism As the Heartbeat of the Church with Jim Harris

Play
Read more

In this episode we discuss the need for a renewed approach to evangelism and discipleship in the church. Many pastors today hold the view that evangelism in the modern church is dead and no longer useful. In fact some deem evangelism as “old fashioned” and “out dated.” However, without Biblical evangelism the church will surely plateau, decline and die. To grow a church you must lead people to Jesus Christ and then disciple them into the likeness of Christ. Evangelism must become the central focus of any local church that desires to be revitalized. Dr. Steve Sells, host discussing “Evangelism as the Heart of the Church.”

Jim is a retired Pastor/Evangelist.

Jim Harris – Episode 8

Each year college graduates are faced with the same question, “Where do I go from here?” Often times their degree pushes them to look for a job in their field of study, or they could decide to further their education in grad school. For Jim Harris, he decided to go with option number three and take the year off to live the ski bum lifestyle. One thing led to another until soon enough, Jim was working as an outdoor educator, teaching mountaineering courses with Outward Bound and Alaska Mountain Guides. This was Jim’s life until he posted some photos online from a month long trip he went on in Wrangle St. Elias Park in Alaska. The photos went viral and , launched him into a career as an adventure photographer. With continual success, his trips got more exotic and his client list grew to include National Geographic, Camp 4 Collective, and dozens of magazines and outdoor brands. Life was pretty sweet for Jim, until he found himself laying in a hospital bed in Punta Arenas Chile.

In the fall of 2014, Harris traveled to Chile for an expedition he and frequent travel partner Forrest McCarthy had dreamed up. The idea was to ski and packraft 350 miles down the length of the Patagonian Ice Cap. Practicing with a snow kite just before their departure, Harris fractured 9 vertebra and was paralyzed from sternum down. It was an abrupt end not just to his photo and video livelihood, but to his mobility in the mountains too. Since his accident, Jim has made a miraculous recovery and now has gained the ability to walk, ski, and bike once again. Listen in to my discussion with Jim to find out more about his journey so far!

55: Letting Go Of What You Can't Control, with Jim Harris

Play
Read more

Jim Harris worked as a ski photographer and writer, for clients including National Geographic, until he was injured while snowkiting in Patagonia fracturing nine vertebra and was paralyzed from sternum down.

It took over a week after the injury to reach definitive care where five of his nine broken vertebra were fused. It was an abrupt end not just to his photo and video livelihood, but to his mobility in the mountains too. Admittedly, he felt lucky that the doctor never told him he’d never walk again, as there wasn’t much encouragement to think he would. After his spine fusion, he began to wiggle a toe. Within a few months, muscles in both legs began firing.

In the four years since that accident, Harris has transitioned from a wheelchair to walker to cane and continues to challenge the limitations of his disability. It’s unlikely that Jim Harris will return to mountain guiding or expedition photo work; the athleticism he once possessed may be lost forever. However, Harris has continued to push the limitations of his disability via mountain biking, skiing, hiking, and surfing.

Today, Jim spends much of his time devoted to his art, which features many of the beautiful mountain landscapes that he has explored. He is the creator of Perpetual Weekend as well as the founder and principle artist at Gorgeous Storm, an art and printmaking shop in Carbondale, CO.
