In Mrs. Henry's role, she acts as the CEO of Broward County, managing a budget of about $5 billion and directs the functions of county government, which includes about 2 million residents and operations for nearly 60 agencies, including the Ft. Lauderdale Airport, seaport, and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau. Mrs. Henry is a Miami native who earned her B.S. in government and an M.S. in Public Administration from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. She has had a longstanding career in public service, with more than 40 years of experience in public administration, including service in Montgomery County, Ohio and the City of Miami, Fl. She began working for Broward County in 1996, left for Miami to assist with the city’s financial recovery serving as Assistant City Manager of Finance Administration, and returned to Broward in 2000, to serve as Deputy County Administrator for eight years prior to her appointment as County Administrator. In 2017, Mrs. Henry was the first Black woman to win the prestigious Mark E. Keane Memorial Award for Excellence awarded by ICM, the International City/County Management Association.  "Only a handful of women have ever received this coveted recognition in the history of the organization.  Bertha is the first African-American woman to receive this award which was presented at the ICMA annual meeting."

Her passion for the people she serves and the profession of local government management drives her to make a difference “day in and day out,” as she says. In this podcast, Henry talks about the challenges her community has faced—from natural disasters to the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida—and how it has brought people together.
