#10 Anthony Bourdain, The Intellectual Dark Web, and Creating Valuable Work with Daniele Bolelli

Daniele Bolelli is an Italian-born professor, martial artist, podcaster,  and author of several books including On the Warrior's Path and Not  Afraid. He's appeared as a guest on popular podcasts such as Joe  Rogan's, Adam Carolla's, and Skepticality, the official podcast of the  Skeptic Society. We opened up our conversation by touching on the tragic  death of Anthony Bourdain, then got a bit into Daniele's experience in  losing his wife and having to raise his daughter on his own. We then  went onto critically break down "The Intellectual Dark Web" and this new  culture of niche tribes, and we closed with speaking about how  important it is to not get caught in this spiral of focusing on problems  we're against, but rather focus on what we're for, and the tangible  solutions we need to create to move forward.  Follow Daniele on Twitter at @DBolelli  Order his most recent book "Not Afraid" here: amzn.to/2y0FRUH

Ep. 20 - Daniele Bolelli on History, Martial Arts, and Podcasting

Daniele Bolelli is the host of the History on Fire podcast, where he has captured audiences with episodes that range from Teddy Roosevelt to Caravaggio to Crazy Horse. He has written many books on topics from religion to martial arts. His books include:  On the Warrior's Path and Not Afraid. And don’t miss his Drunken Taoist Podcast for some awesome interviews.

One of the things that has always fascinated me about Daniele is the seeming contradictions in his life. He is a college professor and serious academic, but he doesn’t take himself too seriously. He is both irreverent and disciplined and his content that is entertaining and informative.

Daniele was generous enough to read my book back in the day and give me a blurb. For which I am eternally grateful.

In this episode, Daniele talks about growing up in Italy and what he learned from his literary parents. And how he moved to the United States to study Native American history at UCLA. And how he trained in martial arts such as karate, jiu jitsu, and boxing. And what he’s learned from the godfather of history podcasting, Dan Carlin.

It was such a good conversation and I hope you enjoy it!

If something does not fit the parameters of our scientific concept of the universe, does that mean it doesn't exist at all? In this episode, we discuss the limited mind and the potential for experiences to happen outside our understanding of reality. Daniele and Shantih examine the way to remain open without being swayed by either religious fanaticism or scientific austerity.

The Mythology & Meaning of Teaching Martial Arts With Daniele Bolelli

I talk to Daniele Bolelli who is a writer, martial artist and a university professor. He is the host of multiple podcasts including the Drunken Daoist podcast and the History on Fire podcast. He has also authored many books such as "On the Warrior’s Path: Philosophy, Fighting, and Martial Arts Mythology" and "Not Afraid: On Fear, Heartbreak, Raising a Baby Girl, and Cage Fighting".

Here we discuss where a martial arts teacher should find and place the limits of their expertise. How martial arts is perfect for learning the limits of your capability and reaching your potential despite a few broken arms and busted knees, Why the timid sport of soccer has the most violent fanbase of all and why a jack of all trades may be the master of none, but can oftentimes be better than only a master of one.
