Spot On Insurance
Apple Podcasts Rate and Review for SpotOn Troy Korsgaden is a sought-after financial services and insurance consultant. His company, Korsgaden International, specializes in agency building, global marketing, technology strategies, and distribution for some of the world’s largest financial services companies and insurance carriers. Troy is also the author of many books, with the most recent one titled Inflection Point, where he guides business owners on how to adapt their insurance or financial services agencies in an ever-changing market and technological economy. Troy joins us to discuss how the pandemic has exposed old business models and how creating new business models let small, forward-thinking businesses thrive. He discusses how the industry has been moving away from the customer-centric approach, and how 2020 brought them all back to this core principle. He explains how companies can flaunt their value over those who offer the cheapest prices. Troy also shares why the best companies are trying to innovate on a daily basis and why it’s important for businesses to frequently re-tool the services they offer. "You need to meet customers where they want to connect - not where you want them to connect.” - Troy Korsgaden Today on Spot On Insurance: The big changes that happened in the industry since 2020. Why businesses need to ditch the "old" business model to move forward. How companies determine where they can get in touch with their clients. New technologies and knowing what and how to upgrade. Making clients see that your company offers more value than your competition. How frequently should we re-tool our services? Deep diving into Open Platform Solutions. Why customers aren't always looking for the cheapest price. What it means to offer unrivaled service. Why you don't want ‘generalist’ employees. Constant re-tooling and how it will boost your market value. Key Takeaways: You have to give great service, great advice, and then you earn the right to offer solutions. Customer-First is only true if you go to where the customers go, and not be a company that tells them what to do and how to best communicate with you. Any company can have great first impressions, but only few will make it last. This is a very special episode for me. I had an opportunity to sit down with an industry giant, a 35 year expert in the field of insurance, an award winning agency owner, consultant, speaker, author, my friend and mentor Troy Korsgaden. This episode is actually part two of a series and you can find the beginning of the interview here on the None of My Business Podcast. In that portion, we talk about how he built his agency, how a visit to the dentist changed his life, and some best practices when it comes to growing your business. In this episode, we talk about insurance. Troy talks about how the customer is king. What does that mean to you as a consumer and what does that mean if you are an agency owner? We talk about what it really means to be a part of a family’s financial team. A partner. How to forge deeper customer relations with your book of business. How important an annual review really is and how it benefits both client and agent. Troy talks about the use of technology and how he encourages its use, but with caution. He stresses the need for human interaction throughout all parts of the process. We go on do discuss something that is important but can be confusing. Price. Has our industry been commoditized? Did we do it to ourselves? How can we fix it or dispel the myth? My thanks to Troy for coming on and finding some time in his busy schedule to chat with me. It was a conversation I know I’ll never forget. Be safe out there! This is a very special episode for me. I had an opportunity to sit down with an industry giant, a 35 year expert in the field of insurance, an award-winning agency owner, consultant, speaker, author, my friend, and mentor Troy Korsgaden. This episode is actually part one of a two-part interview that I did with Troy. Find the second part in my other podcast, Simply Explaining Insurance. In this first part, we talk about his path to becoming an agency owner. We discuss how he ran a successful agency in his first 7 years. Something was telling Troy it could be better. I got the sense he felt underwhelmed. Troy then tells me the story of how a phone call from his dentist changed his life. He doubled the size of his agency in 18 months and soon everyone in the industry knew him as just “Troy”. He exited his agency (which his sisters still run to this day) and entered the consulting world. The core of Troy’s transformation was around building thoughtful systems and then delegating them to professional staff. This includes teaching them tested scripts on how to handle common objections. It also includes saying the right things to the right people at the right time. These are simple, easy to understand, measurable tasks. But not easy. These take time, practice and real conviction to implement properly. We discuss what it means to thoughtfully onboard technology. How much is too much? Troy believes that human touch is always going to be important. I ask him what is the simplest thing we can do to move the needle? Again, he gives you an actionable measurable answer. See 4 people every day. This may vary by industry but it’s no secret that activity is going to drive growth. Up your activity, up your growth. My sincerest thanks to Troy. It was an absolute pleasure having him on the show and to be able to pick his brain about being a successful business owner. Reach out to him below and keep up the good work!
