The Logistics of Logistics

Evan Smith and Joe Lynch discuss the Altana Story. Evan is the CEO and Co-founder of Altana, a technology company that transforms the world’s public and non-public data into an intelligent, shared model of the global supply chain. About Evan Smith Evan Smith is CEO and co-founder of Altana. He founded Altana in 2018, along with co-founders CTO Peter Swartz and COO Raphael Tehranian, after identifying a need for access to a trusted source of real time supply chain information. The three founded Altana while working at Panijiva, a trade data science company. Evan led enterprise solutions and strategic partnerships for Panjiva and also previously served as the CEO of IMBU Technologies, a company providing textile supply chain automation software. Evan graduated from Yale University with a bachelor’s degree in Economics. About Altana Altana Technologies transforms the world’s public and non-public data into an intelligent, shared model of the global supply chain. Enterprises, governments, and logistics providers connect to Altana’s Trusted Network Platform to illuminate, collaborate, and build trust across their global business networks. Through Altana, organizations across the public and private sectors are building a more resilient, secure, inclusive, and sustainable globalization. Key Takeaways: The Altana Story Evan Smith is the CEO and Co-founder of Altana, a platform for building trusted networks on a shared source of truth for the global supply chain. In the podcast interview, Evan and Joe discussed Evan’s career, the founding of Altana, and why private and public sector organizations need a technology platform that will enable them to build a more resilient, secure, and sustainable globalization. Altana’s visions for Globalization 2.0: a globalization defined by Trusted Networks, which span and connect nation states, businesses, and civil society in resilient, secure, sustainable, and inclusive global business networks. The Altana Atlas is powered by a dynamic AI model of the supply chain, which learns from billions of data points describing businesses, facilities, supply chain flows, and ownership relationships worldwide. The Altana Atlas learns from both public and non-public data that cannot be directly pooled. This creates unprecedented visibility across the supply chain that was previously impossible because of data sovereignty, privacy, and intellectual property protections. The Altana Atlas integrates all internal data, external data, and analytics to create a dynamic view of a company’s multi-tier value chains and extended business network — enabling companies to make informed decisions on how the materials actually move from facility to facility across the supply chain network. 166: Evan Smith | From Stake Presidency to LGBTQ+ Ally and Beyond

Latter Gay Stories

Evan Smith met the intersection of sexuality and religion while serving as an LDS Bishop and eventually in a Stake Presidency. It didn’t take long before Evan began to better understand the difficult and impossible restraints the Church’s policies and doctrines place on LGBTQ Mormons. In the midst of these dichotomies, Evan, and his wife, Cheryl learned that their own son, Weston, was gay. The Smiths learned that understanding and advocating for LGBTQ people takes a sharp turn when someone close to you is directly impacted by this topic. As a result, Evan and Cheryl became allies and advocates for queer Mormons, and Evan used his position in his Stake Presidency to directly discuss this topic with General Authorities and Latter-day Saint congregations. In this episode, Evan candidly shares his discussions with Church leadership, what his family has learned having a gay son, his current membership status in the Mormon church, and what we can all do to better understand the LGBTQ experience. Evan Smith is also the author of Gay Latter-day Saint Crossroads, a book he acknowledges was written to explain, and hopefully do something productive with the pain that comes from the church’s teachings about sexual orientation and gender identity. The book also explores whether the church’s current position on gay sexual behavior is more reflective of human prejudice than it is of divine truth. Evan also uses the book to try to make amends for any harm he caused in the past as a leader in the church. Interview with Evan Smith

Breakfast Leadership Show

Organizations change when their leaders do: when each leader chooses a growth-learning mindset, assumes personal responsibility ("it IS me!"), and builds capabilities to learn and lead by example.  Evan helps leaders and their organizations grapple successfully with significant demands for learning and growth.  In addition to his own independent clients and work with BolsterUp,  he works with partners Kotter Inc. and Box of Crayons , bringing smart, practical habit change that helps leaders to shift their patterns, create more engagement, and have more impact.   He's worked with leaders across F500 companies, private firms (including startups), government and nonprofits.  He holds an MBA from the Yale School of Organization and Management; Bachelors degrees in Engineering and Liberal Arts from Penn State; and lives in Providence, RI.    CURRENT WORK at bolsterup.life While burnout is often described as an individual's problem - we see organizations with significant influence on the causes, triggers and drivers of burnout.  Individual people - working alone - can't "resilience" their way out of burnout.  Our work supports individuals, leaders and organizations to create more holistic, supportive and collaborative work environments; in healthcare, creating purposeful, meaningful, rewarding work for clinicians and great outcomes for patients. TWO STEPS YOU CAN TAKE -  For those working in HEALTHCARE as clinicians, nurses, physicians... Please share your experience with stress and burnout in your organization by completing a short survey (less than five minutes) on https://bolsterup.life Your input will really help to combat burnout.  To support need to better understand two things: how individual care providers are experiencing burnout, and  what healthcare organizations are actually doing today to mitigate the systemic causes of burnout. To thank you - We'll share "5 Ways to Reduce Burnout for Provider Teams" - that you can use with your team (or share with your senior leadership) For you - as a leader: To address burnout you may be experiencing... One indicator of burnout - individually - is a feeling of depersonalization: where you experience separation of your Self from deeper purpose and meaning in your work - and separation from real contact with people (colleagues, team-mates, partners) important to you in that work.  You can take some small and powerful steps that will help to improve your connection with others in your world/ your team. To make a better connection - and improve the care and connection you get in return: Go to metamg.com; there, you can download "Making a Better Connection", a collection of tips you can use right away to close the gap, and get closer to people who matter to you and your work.   Social media: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cesmith/ https://twitter.com/cesmith_ Support the Breakfast Leadership Network!
