Bonus Episode - Thelma Schoonmaker

Thelma Schoonmaker is the legendary, now eight-time Oscar-nominated, three-time Oscar-winning editor of pretty much all of director Martin Scorsese’s portfolio. She’s as integral to the success of his films as the maestro himself. Their latest work together is “The Irishman,” the Netflix original film that recently racked up 10 Oscar nominations, Schoonmaker’s work among them. At three-and-a-half hours, the film is a contemporary American epic, and yet it moves like lightning. Each sequence propels the vast narrative forward.

On this episode of “The Call Sheet,” Schoonmaker details the work that went into assembling the film, discusses Robert De Niro’s brilliant performance (after having observed his trajectory from the editing suite for decades) and much more. Also, in a bonus interview, sound mixer Tom Fleischman and sound editor Eugene Gearty explain how the power of the film lies in its subtlety and quiet moments.

Episode 131: Editor Thelma Schoonmaker On The Music Of Scorsese

Genius though he is, Martin Scorsese would be the first to admit the enormous debt of gratitude he owes to one Thelma Schoonmaker.

For Thelma is the woman who has edited over 20 of his movies, from Raging Bull and Casino to Gangs Of New York and The Departed. So it's truly an honour to welcome her to Soundtracking, the weekly screen music podcast. As you'd hope, she has some great stories to share with us.

Thelma was married to the late Michael Powell, one half of the legendary partnership Powell and Pressburger. Their work influenced Martin hugely - and indeed it was he who introduced Thelma to her would-be husband.

You'll hear plenty of music from their films, as well as some of the more memorable cues to feature in Martin's back catalogue. There are a few notable clips to enjoy, too ...

Thelma Schoonmaker: Martin Scorsese's Secret Weapon

Thelma Schoonmaker—with a face and demeanor like your favorite grade school teacher—may be the last person you’d imagine to helm the epic violence of Martin Scorsese’s films. Yet this earnest, soft spoken woman has edited every single movie he’s done since Raging Bull. The two’s relationship is considered one of the most successful working marriages in movie history, earning Schoonmaker three Academy Awards and seven nominations. But filmmaking wasn’t always the plan. She talks to Here’s the Thing host Alec Baldwin about Scorsese’s pet peeves, what it’s like to “create” violence, and the woman she credits with giving her the “greatest life in the world.”

Ep 53: Thelma Schoonmaker's Raging Bull

Apologies to Mr. Scorsese and Mr. De Niro, but we at Flixwise think the true star of the 53rd movie on the Sight and Sound list, Raging Bull (1980), is editor extraordinaire Thelma Schoonmaker. Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese are often thought of as the quintessential actor/director tag-team. From Mean Streets through Casino the pair have amassed an impressive collection of great studies in toxic masculinity, perhaps none more noxious than today's first topic, Raging Bull. It's true that Raging Bull remains a terrific showcase for Scorsese's visual flourishes and De Niro's Capital-A Acting, and it's clear that this pair of heavyweights shared a strong conviction that the story of boxer Jake LaMotta needed to be brought to the screen. That said, today's panelists -  Lady P, Martin Kessler, and Marya E. Gates - spend a good deal of today's episode explaining why they think the woman stringing the story together is the true champion of this production.

For the second topic, the panel discusses other famous actor/director collaborators. They discuss why audiences enjoy watching recurring team-ups and they also discuss some of the pitfalls of going to the same actor well over and over again. Then they each offer up some of their personal favorite duos.

Finally, Marya tells listeners why they should check out her latest podcast project: Female Filmmaker Friday.
