Having appeared in 18 Broadway Shows and received the Legacy Robe 6 times, an honor most ensemble members never receive even once, this weeks guest, Lisa Gajda, is a legend in our industry. She joined us both before Covid-19 and after to share not only her incredible journey to motherhood, but how she transitioned out of the business to become a therapist. Not surprisingly, our conversations turned into therapy for the two of us dealing with aging in the business, carrying our identity as mothers who are also viable artists in our community, and when and how you know it’s time (or not) to move on. Here is Part Two, our catch up with Lisa, 8 months later....

A Broad's Way 1st Guest: Broadway's Lisa Gajda!

Lisa has appeared in 18....I REPEAT 18...Broadway shows over her many decades as a dancer. She made her Broadway debut in Tommy and went onto join the casts of Movin' Out, Fosse, Spamalot, Pal Joey, Elf, Chaplin, Tuck Everlasting, and SO. MUCH. MORE.

During her early career, she lived and worked out in LA but after a couple years on the west coast, she quickly discovered that New York was the place she'd forever dream of calling home. She dove head first into her training at Steps on Broadway where she spent morning, noon, and night dancing and learning everything she needed to become the success she is. Aside from her dancing, much of her success needs to be credited to her incredible ability to bring her sense of self into every job she has had. Casey Nicholaw refers to Lisa Gajda as his "muse" and anybody who knows her, knows her not only as a pillar in the Broadway community but also for her quick wit, honesty, and hard work. Beyond her unprecedented amount of Broadway credits, she is one of the most honest and charismatic human beings I’ve ever been lucky enough to work with. Lisa brings her strong and unapologetic self to every project she does and our interview truly left no stone unturned.

Now retired after 30 years in the business, Lisa just received her Bachelors Degree with the LEAP program at St. Mary’s College and will begin her masters in Marriage and Family therapy at Mercy College in September 2019.

We talked through falling in love with dance, navigating unemployment, finding her place in the theater industry, how social media is effecting performers, and her new career change.

Broadway's Backbone Ep: 3 Guest: Lisa Gajda Host:Brad Bradley

Lisa Gajda
Broadway’s Backbone is a podcast dedicated to the men and woman of the ensemble: the chorus of dancers, singers, and actors that are the foundation of every Broadway musical. These often-unsung gypsies are the hardest working people on the boards and are Broadways backbone. Each episode interviews a Broadway vet about their life, career and dreams, but also delves into the real topics that aren’t always shared. The life of a gypsy maybe full of passion, but not always filled with glamour. Each guest shares intimate details about their journey. There is no mud slinging, but a little dirt. It’s hosted by Brad Bradley, a Broadway Performer himself, he has worked with most of the guests, so he knows what questions to ask. It’s a real look into the life that so many kids dream of. This podcast is in honor of the folks of the ensemble and the people who plan to be them.
