S3:E8 Glen Plake

Afterglow, A Mountain Storytelling Podcast

In our eighth and final episode, we sit down with skiing icon Glen Plake. As a pioneer of the extreme skiing movement, Plake is most well known for his seminal appearances in the classic Greg Stump films including Blizzard of Aahhh's, the Maltese Flamengo and License to Thrill. With his signature mohawk, Plake is arguably the most recognizable and most well known skier in the world. Over three decades he has maintained a love for all disciplines of the sport and a drive that has kept him timelessly relevant. It is safe to say, whether skiing 8-000 meter peaks, recording for Warren Miller Films, or traveling the country as part of his "Down Home" Tour, Plake has spread the love of skiing to millions across the globe. Many of Glen's physical accomplishments have been well documented. In our chat, I wanted to learn more about him as a person. Plake occupies the rare air of hero status for many skiers. In our conversation I quickly realized that he is a historian of skiing, someone who has seen three decades of the evolution of a sport. Glen is indeed one of the brightest shining lights we've ever had the chance to chat with, and our conversation does not disappoint.

TPM Episode 36: Glen Plake, Ski Icon

The Powell Movement Action Sports Podcast

Glen Plake is the most famous skier ever, in my opinion.  While his skiing has always been top level, no matter what type of skiing he was doing at the time, he’ll always be remembered as the guy with the Mohhawk.   The guy who, along with Scot Schmidt, Mike Hattrup, and Greg Stump, created the overused word Extreme.  From arrests to celebrities to his thoughts on the state of skiing, here is the best of Glen Plake 2:00 Plakeisms:  Glen’s thoughts on global warming, the hotel (ski industry), going out into the back country, traditional skiing, and technique.  He keeps it real 9:10: Evo (listen for special offer) and Diecutstickers.com (Listen for 10% off your first order with DCS 15) 10:43”  Plakeisms:  Glen’s thoughts on global warming, the hotel (ski industry), going out into the back country, traditional skiing, and technique.  He keeps it real 32:57:   Patrol USA Use TPM10 at checkout on the site and get 10% off and RESQWATER 34:15:  Getting arrested with 40 pounds of Mushrooms and how Blizzard of AAhhh’s saved  him 38:00:  Being an innovator in Snowboarding in the early days with Shaun Palmer 41:00:  Hanging with Coolio, Carl Lewis, Shaun Palmer for a week 47:00:  Evander Holyfield 49:00:  Meeting Seal and realizing the connection between his music and Stumps films 55:00:  The Patrick Duffy Baja 500 story. Sponsored, Episode 14: Glen Plake, part two

Sponsored: The stories behind the skiers

On this episode of the "Sponsored" podcast, Glen Plake comes on for part two, recorded just after the 2016 presidential election. Plake discusses the election with host Mike Powell. "We've had all these baby boomer presidents for years and years. They were born during the highest times of prosperity. Sex, drugs, and rock n' roll and hippies and women's rights and all this social stuff and all their agends have been played out. And yet, The Gen X's were born with divorce and energy crisis and all these kind of leftover shit. Whatever." The two also discuss his diamond-studded tooth ("It was not a bling tooth, it was a pirate tooth!"), the intracacies of his mohawk, and his grassroots career in the face of a digital world. "I'm old school, hand in hand, and I love that," says Plake. "I meet so many people that say they are my fans and I tell everybody, I might only have 10 to 15,000 followers, but I tell you what, you call one right now, tell them you have a dead battery, and they'll be on their way."
