World of Warcraft Spurs Success in Advancement feat. Adrian Owen Jones

Nonprofit Notes with Zuri Group

Like many of our guests on Nonprofit Notes, Adrian Owen Jones is wildly interesting. Formerly the Assistant VP for Advancement Services at Louisiana State University Foundation and now Chief Growth Officer at ThreeSixtyEight, Adrian discusses her background in grant management, her role in Advancement Services, and notably, how her World of Warcraft gaming skills have lent themselves to building a highly successful advancement operation at LSUF. She became proficient at talent management, mastering the “ability to quickly identify the strengths, talents, and abilities of the people around me, and think creatively about how to apply them.” Listen in to hear Adrian and Zuri Group’s Chris Cannon contemplate the advancement space, its creativity gaps, and the path forward.  Want to learn more about Adrian? Episode Eighteen: The Lost Population (with Adrian Owen)

The BrainCore Podcast

To continue their conversations on consciousness, Tolu and Kristina are joined by Dr. Adrian Owen, a world-renowned neuroscientist, and Professor at the Brain and Mind Institute in London, Ontario. Back in 2006, Adrian's work showed that some individuals who were in a vegetative state could respond to questions with their brain activation - brain activation that could be viewed with an fMRI. In this episode, they discuss how this research informs the conversation on consciousness in disciplines such as philosophy and psychology. They also talk about the implications of the research on the legalities surrounding medical care and end-of-life care. Towards the end, they talk about Adrian's band BAM! and how through the pandemic, they've still been able to make some music. The term of the episode is the Gray Zone.  Things we referenced: Adrian’s Book Into the Gray Zone: http://intothegrayzone.com/ Exciting clip from the study!: www.intothegrayzone.com/mindreader Email: thebraincorepodcast@gmail.com Instagram: @thebraincorepodcast Twitter: @thebraincorepod--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Adrian Owen

Discovery

Neuroscientist Adrian Owen has spent much of his career exploring what he calls ‘the grey zone’, a realm of consciousness inhabited by people with severe brain injuries, who are aware yet unable to respond to those around them. It's this inability to respond which has led doctors to conclude that they are unaware. In the late 1990's, Adrian started to question the assumption that they lacked awareness and a chance discovery set him on a novel path of enquiry - could some of these patients be conscious or aware even though they don’t appear to be? His research has revealed that some are, and he’s pioneered techniques to help them to communicate with the outside world. This emerging field of science has implications, not only for patients but, for philosophy and the law. A British scientist, Adrian now runs a research programme at the Brain and Mind Institute at Western University in Canada, dedicated to reaching people in this ‘grey zone’.Picture: Adrian Owen, BBC Copyright

Searching for Awareness after Brain Damage with Adrian Owen

Pager

Author and neuroscientist Professor Adrian Owen joins the Pager Podcast to discuss his work imaging the brain for signs of consciousness in patients with brain injuries. In this episode we discuss the causes of disorders of consciousness, how we can communicate with some patients thought to be unconscious and what can be done with the information gained from neuroimaging and communication with such patients. We discuss why we should be cautious about making judgements on quality of life of individuals following brain damage, the chances of recovery from brain damage and what recovery can realistically be expected to mean, along with where the future of care for patients with brain damage might lie. Do give us a review or rating on Apple Podcasts if you have a moment!
