Impact Talks #41: Greg Jacobson (ER Doctor turned Tech Founder - CEO KaiNexus)

Impact Talks

An ER Doctor turned start-up founder.  As explained by Greg: When I entered the workforce as an ER-resident and then attending, I quickly developed a passion for continuous improvement, Kaizen, and Lean. I immediately realized there were not any software systems to make this work easy, sustainable, transparent, reportable, inclusive and scalable. Honestly, until the internet and cloud-based enterprise software appeared coupled with the connect/collaborate mentality we have today, the possibility of solving this problem didn't exist. Since then, I have spent my time thinking about how to make improvement easier for companies while concurrently building KaiNexus. Working on an idea, building it, talking to our passionate customers, and building the KaiNexus team are some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. KaiNexus has become a living, breathing entity with a powerful sense of self and a mission to impact the world. I am also really excited about sitting on the board of Sergeant Sullivan Center. They are doing such important work making people aware of post- deployment illness (http://sgtsullivancenter.org/issues/post-deployment-illness/). Experience and Non-work Interests: While I still enjoy a couple of ER shifts per month, I've worked on KaiNexus full-time since 2010. When I am not working on KaiNexus or seeing patients, I am hanging out with my awesome wife and daughter, on a quest for the perfect pickle, trying to figure out how I can play more squash, or attempting to finish one of my many home improvement projects. ... 00:00 Introduction & Going into Tech Entrepreneurship 12:30 Friends as cofounders and agreements 18:03 Kaizen: Book principles & Influencing the health care system 30:06 What has KaiNexus done & What is the software? 42:10 Luck & Hiring talent 48:06 Dealing with interviewing and expanding & Implicit bias 01:00:40 Splitting the tasks between cofounders 01:02:00 Marketing and Sales & Practical tips 01:12:46 Practical examples 01:20:10 Lessons learned from a hired CEO 01:23:40 Career before startup being an ER doctor and why still do it? 01:37:25 The stress of entrepreneurship and ER doctor 01:44:55 Dealing with someone leaving the company 01:49:30 Why does tech business attract you more than health business? 01:51:08 Life lessons for entrepreneurs & Closing ... Please subscribe, rate, and review via Apple Podcasts or Podchaser! Show notes and more: https://www.markgraban.com/dr-greg-jacobson-on-juggling-life-and-being-both-an-emergency-physician-and-a-startup-ceo/ Joining me for Episode #31 is Dr. Greg Jacobson, an emergency medicine physician and the CEO/co-founder of KaiNexus, a technology and software company. In the interest of full disclosure, I will mention that I have worked with KaiNexus, in various capacities, since 2011 and I have an ownership stake in the company. That said, Greg is one of the most interesting people you'll ever meet. Many startup CEOs launch their company at night while working their day job. Greg started KaiNexus during the days while working some nights as an E.R. doc. In today's episode, Greg (always the overachiever) shares FIVE favorite mistakes from his career: Not reading more Not figuring out work/life balance Struggling with the diffusion of CEO attention as the company grows Not being appreciative enough Not doing his own due diligence We'll talk about all of that, the importance of creating a culture of continuous improvement in a company, and much more. I think you'll enjoy the conversation, as I did.
