#034 Extera: Is General AI Coming? - Peter Voss (CEO AIGO.ai)

In this episode, I chat with Peter Voss, CEO of AIGO.ai (Ahy-go) and the gentleman who coined the term “Artificial General Intelligence".

AGI has been long talked about for decades but it wasn’t because of computational power that is helping it become a reality but a diversion from how AI has been developed. Data scientists and cognitive psychologists both are needed to make this AI come to life.

Here’s what to expect from the episode;

  • The 3 waves of AI - the history of AI
  • The difference between Programmers / Data Scientist v.s. AGI
  • Are Quantum computers important for General AGI?
  • What are the elements necessary for AGI?
  • What is the mechanism of “Understanding”?
  • Can AGI connect with humans?
  • The human limitation that AGI can make a breakthrough
  • How AGI will deal with the Trolley Problem

Peter Voss started in electronics engineering, then fell in love with software. The first major success was developing a comprehensive ERP package and taking that company from Zero to 400-person IPO in seven years.

Currently, he’s focused on commercializing the second generation of our AGI-based ‘Conversational AI’ technology called 'Aigo' (say: I-go). Aigo.ai is the most advanced natural language interaction platform available. It is implemented using a brain-like cognitive architecture – also known as ‘The Third Wave of AI’.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has divided AI's evolution into 3 distinct waves.  Currently, we find ourselves in the 2nd wave, dominated by machine learning and big data.  The 3rd wave however, is nearly upon us, and will allow AI to go from learning and perceiving to reasoning and possibly even generalizing.  The ability to generalize is AI’s holy grail.  Though rarely mentioned by its name – Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) – it’s often depicted in SciFi movies and books.  DARPA predicts that next-generation methods will be required in order to achieve AGI.

Peter Voss is the man who coined the term AGI and is one of the field’s foremost thought leaders.  Peter joins us on this episode to discuss cognitive architecture, a theory of computational structure he advocates for, and which he believes is our best path to an AGI future.  We chat about a number of interesting subjects, and along the way learn why the very nature of cognitive architecture may eliminate the problem of bias in AI, why conversational AI is the killer app for cognitive architecture, and why the Turing Test isn't very useful for appraising a machine's intelligence.

If Chatbots Only Had a Brain - Peter Voss - Ep137

It's pretty much the norm for us now that when we visit a website we are increasingly used to seeing the arrival on-screen of a helpful chat assistant, normally popping up in the bottom corner of the page and offering to help us out and to try to triage our requirements.

The issue though is these types of services are limited and are not smart enough to understand our requirements or add context to the conversation, but what if they were smarter?

That is the question we ask on this week's Tech interviews with my guest CEO and founder of aigo.ai, Peter Voss.

Join us as we discuss;
the current state of "assistants"
where is the value in deploying them?
the limitations of assistants without a brain!
how is the technology and the market changing?
the power of cognitive intelligence
how a good assistant can help retain customers
how aigo.ai are helping
where to start with a cognitive assistant project

Peter provides a fascinating insight into a part of the technology market that is going to become increasingly prevalent to business as we all look at ways we can use technology to help us be more efficient and improve the experience of our customers, partners and employees.

S3 Bonus: Peter Voss, AIGO

Peter Voss fell in love with software after starting a hardware design company. He moved to America 25 years ago, and rapidly connected with interesting people - leaders in the field of nano technology, AI, longevity, futurism... in face, he got very involved with futurism, following tech that could repair damage in your body and truly conquer aging. His target is to live long enough to take benefit from these life extending technologies, so he practices calorie restriction and is exploring cryonics. For fun, he rides motorcycles, specifically his 1000CC BMW racing bike. Not too long ago, he found himself struck by how "dumb" software is, or better put, how narrow. So his mission for the last 25 years has been to make software smarter. This led him to dig into the current definitions for what is knowledge, and our relationship with psychology, etc - to deeply understand cognition and intelligence to understand what we knew. He came up with a design for an AI, centering around the phrase AGI - artificial general intelligence. This is the creation story of AIGO.

All About AGI: A Podcast with Peter Voss

About Peter Voss

Peter Voss is Founder and CEO, Adaptive Artificial Intelligence Inc. He is an entrepreneur with a background in electronics, computer systems, business, and technical software. He is also concerned with the intersection between artificial intelligence software and the human condition as conceived by cognitive science, philosophy, psychology, and ethics. Since the early 1990’s he has been researching and developing artificial general intelligence, founding Adaptive A.I. Inc. in December, 2001 with the goal of developing a commercially viable general-purpose AI engine.   Born in Germany, he moved at age 12 to South Africa. He worked in manufacturing and testing of diesel power generators, and the design and production of large static inverters. He started the company Electronic Designs in 1979 to custom build microprocessor-controlled systems for industrial applications. A year later, he started a computer systems company to provide turnkey solutions to medium sized businesses. After 13 years he took the company public in 1987, employing a staff of 400. He sold the company in 1992, and moved to the United States in 1995.   He believes that integrating insights from the following areas of cognitive science are crucial for rapid progress in Artificial Intelligence:

  • Philosophy/ epistemology — understanding the true nature of knowledge.
  • Cognitive psychology (including developmental & psychometric) for analysis of cognition — and especially — general conceptual intelligence.
  • Computer science — self-modifying systems, combining new connectionist pattern manipulation techniques with “traditional” AI engineering.
His other big passion is for exploring what he calls Optimal Living: Maximizing both the quantity & quality of life. He sees personal responsibility and optimizing knowledge acquisition as key. Specific interests include:
  • Rationality, as a means for knowledge. He’s largely sympathetic to the philosophy of Objectivism, and has done quite a bit of work on developing a rational approach to (personal & social) ethics.
  • Health (quality): physical, financial, cognitive, and emotional (passions, meaningful relationships, appreciation of art, etc.). Psychology: IQ & EQ.
  • Longevity (quantity): general research, CRON (calorie restriction), and cryonics.
  • Environment: economic, social, and political systems conducive to Optimal Living.
These interests logically lead to an interest in Futurism, in technology for improving life — overcoming limits to personal growth & improvement. The transhumanist philosophy of Extropianism best embodies this quest. Specific technologies that seem to hold most promise include AI, Nanotechnology, and various health & longevity approaches mentioned above.  Peter authored Essentials of General Intelligence: The direct path to AGI, Calorie Poisoning: Civilization’s Exploding Killer Disease, True Morality – Rational Principles for Optimal Living, The Nature of Freewill, Advanced Intelligence: SI, IA, and the Global Brain, Why Machines will become Hyper-Intelligent before Humans do, SIAI’s Guidelines for building “Friendly” AI, Metaphysics — it’s simpler than you think, De-scription versus Pre-scription — and other Ethical Confusions, Longevity — Major Factors Determining Life-Span, and Extropy NOW!   Watch Increased Intelligence, Improved Life, Peter Voss – Singularity Institute Interview Series, and First Annual Colloquium on the Law of Transhuman Persons: Voss & Yudkowsky.
