Neurodiverse Parenting: Raising “Differently Wired” Children with Debbie Reber - 414

Relationship School Podcast

This week I spoke with Debbie Reber, author, and founder of TILT Parenting which offers resources to parents of neurodiverse “differently wired” humans to help navigate these uncertain waters in a world where everything is biased towards “normal”. We speak about how ADHD is considered neurodiverse, and often oversimplified as someone who experiences challenges with their focus when in reality it includes challenges with emotional regulation, impulsivity, misreading social cues, and rejection sensitive dysphoria. We also learn about the Autism Spectrum, and some of the terminology like “twice exceptional”, “masking”, “high-functioning” and “Aspergers”. And, of course, we talk about neurotypical-neurodiverse relationships. EP. 191: Raising Differently Wired ADHD Kids with Debbie Reber

ADHD for Smart Ass Women with Tracy Otsuka

Parenting activist and author Debbie Reber had a difficult time with the structure of school growing up, so when her son Asher also started struggling to have his unique learning needs supported in the classroom, she knew she had to do things differently. Incorporating expert advice and a strengths-based philosophy, Debbie started creating the resources that she wishes she’d had when she was younger, and, after much collaborating and fine-tuning, she found an approach to teaching that supported Asher’s ADHD learning needs and encouraged emotional intelligence and self-understanding.  What started as an alternative approach to schooling for her son eventually transformed into Tilt Parenting, an educational resource aimed at helping parents who are raising differently wired children do so from a place of confidence, connection, and joy. Debbie founded Tilt Parenting because she knows how isolating it is trying to navigate a system that wasn’t built for differently wired brains and she wanted to help other parents avoid the same painful roadblocks she and her husband encountered. For all the parents of differently wired children who are feeling hopeless about finding the right supports, Debbie’s story will give you encouragement that a different way of parenting and educating is out there and possible. Educating Differently Wired Kids with Debbie Reber

Modern Education Movement

I’m really excited for today’s show, which is especially for parents raising differently wired children - children with learning disabilities, ADHD, twice-exceptional, autism, sensory processing challenges, anxiety, giftedness and more.I didn’t realize that more than 20 percent of today’s children are in some way neurologically atypical. My guest today, Debbie Reber refers to this as “differently wired.” And because the world isn’t set up to accommodate their unique way of being, these exceptional kids and the parents raising them, struggle to navigate their journey. This is the situation Debbie found herself in as she raised her child Asher. And despite her attempts to get support, she discovered little out there that spoke to her situation. In 2016 Debbie created Tilt Parenting to help parents like her get the support they need.Since then, she’s given a TEDx talk and published the book Differently Wired: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World. Her podcast has over 3 million downloads. Educating differently wired kids - no better person on the planet to talk about this!Links Mentioned In Episode>>> Tilt Parenting>>> Connect on Facebook | Instagram | TwitterConnect With UsFind us on Facebook and LinkedIn or email podcast AT gerrykirk DOT net.Make sure to subscribe to the show, we release a new episode every Tuesday at 9 am EST.Subscribe to the Modern Education Movement Calendar (and get a sneak preview of upcoming episodes and events)>>> Subscribe to the Modern Education Movement Calendar
