The Life of Emile Zola (1938)

Time Honored Pictures

Just in time to miss this years Oscars, we watched “The Life of Emile Zola” directed by William Deiterle. A surprisingly effective film that touches on a lot of our favorite themes: journalistic integrity, class traitors, a reasonable distrust in the state and military, gay-baiting. In what is only the second time in the history of the Academy Awards we allow this film to keep its prize, Best Picture, and on top of that give it the award for Best Foreshadowing. You can find Andy @royalty_valens and Maevas @MaevasEvergreen.Listen to future episodes at our website: Time Honored Pictures Dot Com.

The Life of Emile Zola (1937)

Two Boys in a Balcony

J'accuse! God bless you! It's the Balcony Boys and we're back to discuss the 10th winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture, The Life of Emile Zola, the incomplete look at the Dreyfus Affair and a very particular Zola whose very own Life was part of it. It's a historical biopic and It stars a man whom the damn Criterion Channel has dubbed "an actor among stars." Sounds like a dig but when you see the amount of acting Paul Muni does, you'll be like, "Holy hell... that was a lot of acting!" He's great. The movie is good. We're funny. Enjoy.

10th Academy Awards ‘The Life of Emile Zola’

The Best Picture breakdown by Worthy hosts, Ben Smith and Jon Roberts, are faced with another “biopic” as this episode explores the 10th Academy Awards and 10th Best Picture winner ‘The Life of Emile Zola’. This picture is based on the famous French muckraking writer, Emile Zola and his quest to free a falsely imprisoned Captain in the French Army. With ten nominations, ‘The Life of Emile Zola’ received the highest number of nominations to date.  We also discuss why the Academy Awards were delayed for the first time in their entire history as well as Joseph Schildkraut’s Oscar winning performance as Alfred Dreyfus. Is Paul Muni’s performance and makeup as Emile Zola truly transformative? Are these true events accurately depicted and should that even matter?
