Superwolves: Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Matt Sweeney

Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

In 2005 singer Bonnie "Prince" Billy a.k.a. Will Oldham and guitarist Matt Sweeney released the Superwolf album, which has developed a cult following that includes Rick Rubin who absolutely fell in love with the project. Now, 16 years later, they’re back with the follow-up, Superwolves. The new album was five years in the making—a leisurely pace that allowed Oldham and Sweeney to be incredibly intentional with their creative choices. On today’s episode, Rick Rubin talks to Oldham and Sweeney about their work together, which Rick considers some of his favorite contemporary music and the reason he’s since used Sweeney on so many of the sessions he’s produced including the Dixie Chicks, Cat Stevens, and Adele. Will Oldham talks about his philosophy on connecting with his audience, and how if this pandemic were to take us all, Superwolves would be a great album to go out on.Subscribe to Broken Record’s YouTube channel to hear all of our interviews:  https://www.youtube.com/brokenrecordpodcast and follow us on Twitter @BrokenRecordYou can also check out past episodes here: https://brokenrecordpodcast.comCheck out a playlist of our favorite Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Matt Sweeney songs HERE. John Phillips vs. Television (feat. Matt Sweeney)

CrossFade: The Dueling Album Review Show

Freehand guitarist Matt Sweeney (heard in the Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack, Skunk, Chavez, and more) guests on this episode of CrossFade! He picked “John, the Wolf King of L.A.,” the first solo record from The Mamas & The Papas founder John Phillips, because of its hauntingly beautiful arrangements and its dark underbelly. The discussion focuses on how such sunny-sounding music can hide such sinister stories, and what that says about the man who embodied it all. Host Matt Helgeson chose “Marquee Moon,” the debut album of American rock band Television – a true guitarist’s record and a through-and-through groundbreaking rock album that would help shape punk, pop, and art rock through the late 1970s and ‘80s. It opened both Helgeson and Sweeney’s eyes to the depths that rock riffs can plumb – there’s stuff on this record that even they can’t figure out to this day. Bonus: Interview w/ Matt Sweeney

Late Era

When we finished taping our Season Two premiere on Santana’s Supernatural, we realized we had too much good material for one episode. So this week we’re airing a bonus episode featuring our full interview with guitarist Matt Sweeney (Superwolf, Chavez) and many other great projects, which you heard snippets from in the premiere. We talk plenty of Santana, but also get into stranger waters, including Matt’s high school days hanging with Dean and Gene Ween, his forthcoming duo album with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and his role in the great late era Bee Gees record that never was. Please consider reviewing this podcast on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We invite you to join us for Season 2 Episode 2, coming March 25! Late Era is a production of Osiris Media. It is edited and produced and mastered by Winston Cook-Wilson. Logo design by Liz Bee Art & Design. The executive producers of Late Era are RJ Bee & Brian Brinkman. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Value Spectrum: Laughing Water's Matt Sweeney on concentrated, event-driven small value with Tobias on The Acquirers Podcast

The Acquirers Podcast

Matt Sweeney's Laughing Water Capital is a value focused private investment partnership focused primarily on public equities. Laughing Water Capital follows a concentrated approach to equity investing, typically owning 10 - 15 businesses at a time. Sweeney often buys shares in companies that are out of favor on Wall Street due to some sort of operational, optical, or structural problem that we believe is within management’s ability to fix, given enough time. This problem results in a cheap purchase price, and over time Sweeney expects Laughing Water's investments to benefit from both operational improvements and a re-rating as the market’s view shifts from pessimism to optimism.  Twitter: https://twitter.com/laughingh20cap Website: https://www.laughingwatercapital.com/ ABOUT THE PODCAST Hi, I'm Tobias Carlisle.
