Don't be Afraid to Lose - Andrew Tracey - Episode 85

Andrew Tracey, Mens Health UK Fitness Editor, founder of Farm Fitness and all round training machine sat down with Chris and I before we headed to the gym to indulge in some sweaty pushing and pulling back at the start of the year.

We’ve orbited in similar circles as Andrew so it felt only a matter of time before we sat down and press record. If you watch him on instagram his means of fitness generally involve a lot of lifting, and commitment to putting in the time, regardless of where he is, what time it is and how busy his day was.

Inspired by the original Gym Jones, the facility created by Mark Twight to put in the work, we share similar visions as to what the world of fitness can be. A place to learn about your Self if you are prepared to get into the shadows and dark corners of the psyche and inquire into the capacity and potentiality of our capacity and capability.

I wasn’t expecting Andrew to be so gentle, and it was lovely to hear him talk about being inspired, inspiring and putting into the world his efforts in order for them to inspire others and be improved upon for the greater good.

We cover his being non sporty as a youngster but possessing as he calls it “Toerag” fitness, accumulated through hours of playing, doing and being to his first job in a proper gym in Harlow Essex, a place full of doormen and bodybuilders, where you were celebrated for the effort you put in regardless of the weight you lift and then onto the downfall of the Personal Trainer, chasing the career which in actual fact spring boarded Andrew to become who he is today with the breadth of knowledge and pure enthusiasm for fitness and becoming more complete.

Lifting weights isn’t what it is perceived as, strength is important, it teaches us many things and shows us what we can do if we are not afraid to lose in the short term.

This one has been a long time coming! We're so excited that one of the benefits of lockdown was that we managed to get our podcast schedule to sync up with one of the leaders in alternative, back to basics, health and fitness, one of the world's busiest men and absolute legend, Andrew Tracey.

Not only does Andrew run his own events company, he's also the fitness editor at Men's Health and works out like a machine... but not in a gym or simply at home like the rest of us. Andrew's busy life has developed a passion and drive to develop ways to train and 'get it done' in the most unlikely ways and locations. We love his ethos and attitude towards it.

He shares his story of how, after falling out of love with health and fitness, his organic journey has brought him to where he is today. A story which fascinated and inspired us, made us change some of our training volumes and intensities and we're sure it will have a big impact on you too.

#04 Andrew Tracey - Function vs Aesthetics in Fitness

Play
Read more
This week on the Inquisitive Beast podcast I wanted to tackle the subject of Function vs Aesthetics, as it's being discussed a lot at the moment and was sparked by an Insta-story put out by this Episodes guest Andrew Tracey.

The 1st part of the podcast we really talk about Andrew's journey it fitness, it's unconventional in some ways but very cool and has certainly given him a fresh perspective on training. The 2nd half we delve into fitness and our views on, function, aesthetics and how this impacts culture.

Was an absolute pleasure to sit down for a mighty 3 hours with Andrew on a call and dive into this subject, mainly as I not only because Andrew is an absolute gent, but we share a lot of similar views and I respect what he's done, and is doing in the world of fitness.

I think that the later point definitely comes across in the show, honestly, it was hard not to just agree with a lot of what AT shared and at times take points and run with them. Hopefully, this "enthusiasm" of mine, makes for an interesting conversation and causes more healthy questions and debate.

He is also a rad dude that works out anywhere in, vans and vests, like comics and burgers.......I mean, how were we not going to get on!

Again thanks for everyone who has, listened, liked & shared! Also, thank you to everyone for their positive support of this new endeavor, means a lot.

"I guess I've learned to fall in love with the process, I don't treat it like a chore, I'm excited by the thought of trying new protocols and exercises. I'm motivated by results and they only come through hard work, I think once you figure out the correlation it makes it easier to stay motivated. Find a method you *enjoy* too, it might not be the 'best' way to get to your goals, but at the end of the day the only plan that will work is the one you can stick to."
