Hey! Welcome back to Dream a Little Dream – our space to talk about Art, Life and Everything in between! This conversation that I had with Bethan was illuminating. I knew it was going to be. I have known Bethan for a little while as we met in Law School in London. Our paths have both changed since those days of pounding information into our heads, feeling totally stupid because the English language had suddenly become foreign and trying our best to simple make it through that time! Bethan has found herself in a place where she gets to run and write about it! She has amazing sponsors who support her studies and her runs and she is about to embark on a PhD program where she is going to write about Women in Sport – specifically Ultra Runners. Of course, this is a few years down the road but in the meantime you can follow her on Instagram – her feed is about her runs and her life and something that I think is very powerful – her sharing her story with her struggles with her mental health, namely, anxiety. I posed the question – we are told that we have anxiety because we are not following our dreams, or we are too focused on the outcome instead of enjoying the journey – and while there is truth in that it is not the whole story. Bethan is the perfect person to ask this to – so if you are following your dreams and you are doing what you feel like your heart is telling you to do does that mean your anxiety is gone? Have you cured your anxiety? She answers point blank – no – anxiety is not only situational. Your anxiety is also a way that you process things and about checking in with yourself. She indicates in this conversation that being open about your condition is the best medicine and actually makes the condition easier because you aren’t hiding or trying to fake yourself out of feeling a certain way.This conversation was totally freeing an if you suffer from anxiety Bethan has a very good way of articulating how it feels, how to discover your answer to managing your anxiety.We discussed a little bit about how there is this kind of commodification of mental health issues and quick fixes and Bethan uncovers a little nugget of gold and says, if you take this advice and then add it into your life as another Rushed experience you won’t get to the genuine part of it. Sitting with it, being who you are and accepting that it will pass takes practice and work but when you learn to do that you can begin to Let the magic happen. Find the time and the ways to be kind to yourself in the process and sometimes that means being what people call ‘Incredibly selfish’ but throwing that term as negative out the window and decide that Putting yourself in the middle, in the center of your life is the answer, then everything will work out at the edges.
