Paul Bassat transformed job seeking and venture capital in Australia

From Zero with Adam Schwab

Seek and Square Peg Capital are just a few of the credits to Paul Bassat's name...and he's not done yet. Paul was a lawyer before he made the first big pivot of his career: he took a bet that the internet would replace newspaper classifieds...and the bet paid off. Paul built Australia's largest job-seeking site, Seek, from a St Kilda office with his brother Andrew in the 1990s. When he was at the top of his game at Seek, he made his next big pivot and founded the venture capital firm Square Peg Capital. In this episode, Paul speaks with host Adam Schwab about leaving a safe career in law to start his own business before start-ups were cool, learning James Packer wanted to invest in Seek and what drew him to invest in Canva and ROKT.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Full Spectrum: Entrepreneur, CEO and Investor - Paul Bassat, co-founder and former CEO Seek, and founder Square Peg

Scaling up: Lessons from the world's best CEOs and Founders

Paul Bassat makes for a unique 'Scaling Up' episode. As most listeners will know, Paul and his brother Andrew, along with Matt Rockman founded Seek in 1997 and in doing so carved the path in Australia for great technology businesses. This was a time when the internet itself was in its early days, and it is hard to fathom the foresight required to build what is now a $8b company. Paul left Seek in 2011 and has since founded Square Peg, one of South East Asia’s leading venture capital companies, with investments including Canva, Deputy, Airwallex and Bruce Buchanan’s ROKT, who was featured in episode 2 of this podcast. Because of the duration and success of Paul’s career, we traverse time periods in this conversation to extract the key lessons he has learned through the lens of Seek and how he has applied them in years since. There is no one in my mind who has seen the full spectrum of the ecosystems as a founder, a board member and investor, and so being able to compare and contrast all these experiences makes for a fascinating conversation. Paul is a an Australian treasure for so many reasons, and I am hoping after this conversation you can see why. Ep69 - Paul Bassat, Square Peg Capital

Open the Pod Bay Doors

This week on #OTPBD EP69, we’re delighted to host Paul Bassat, Co-founder at Square Peg Capital. His previous founder experience at Seek and current VC journey makes this episode’s discussion very captivating! Square Peg Capital is a venture capital fund that invests in high-potential businesses in Australia, Israel & South East Asia with a specific focus on series A & series B. Square Peg has made around 35 investments to date and their portfolio includes some groundbreaking startups including Canva, Athena Home Loans, Deputy & more.In this pod, we explore the dynamics between VCs & portfolio companies. Paul states, “Founders are like the captain of a sports team and a VC is like a coach.” Having walked the path of a startup founder himself, Paul shares great insights on how VCs need to support founders and act in the best interests of their portfolio companies. As a VC, one gets to be a part of plenty of groundbreaking ventures, but as a startup, the founder has just one venture that they are (normally) extremely passionate about. We further explore Paul’s experience at Seek and him stepping down in 2011, and then founding Square Peg Capital. Paul has a deep understanding of the Australian tech startups ecosystem and he believes that there is a lot more that has to be improved in this space. He shares his views around the prevalent diversity issue in tech startups and VCs.We conclude the pod with a fire round and get to know Paul’s informal side! Tune in for a unique episode featuring first-hand experience of founding a startup and a remarkable VC. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
