SHE Quest Season 4 opener is blessed to feature Nikki Martin, Writer and full time Yoga Teacher living on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia. Her love of words and stories, both reading and creating them, started very young and with the release of her first fictional novel ‘A Momentary Darkness’ in August 2018 comes the realization of a long time dream. Her passion for words and creating also shows up in her yoga classes. Through her own life experience, and through teaching, she has come to believe whole heartedly in the practice of Yoga as one that can offer space to heal, find strength, build new habits and that always provides an opportunity to take much needed time for ourselves. You can find her teaching at a number of yoga studios in the HRM or in her spare time somewhere near the ocean. In this episode you will learn, Nikki's tumultuous upbringing and what called her out of turmoil and into a spiritual life, her “enough is enough” moment when it came to her addiction and choice to live a sober life, her struggle to accept her blackness, and that no amount of action is enough and that there is a need to be called forth to relentlessly show up with brave honesty.

The Junto Institute: Flourishing Together

“I would say having confidence is really key. Making sure that you're feeling comfortable talking about the technology and being confident in what you're actually talking about…Also confident that you're going to probably be the only woman in the room most of the time.” – Nikki Martin

The telecommunications industry is dominated by men. In addition to the difficulty of the actual work, women holding leadership positions in the telecommunications space also have to deal with unwanted interactions. Nikki Martin, a Junto alum and Client Happiness Officer at Eclipse, breaks down what it’s like as the only woman in the room and also speaks candidly on her struggles with anxiety.

Next, Chad Cooper, CTO of LandscapeHub and Junto mentor, talks about how having kids helped him achieve clarity and balance in his working life. Chad mused, “In a startup, you’re going to have a list longer than you can ever achieve. But if you have clarity, you can achieve the right things.”

One of the key themes running through both conversations is the idea of active, generous listening. Being a generous listener is the trait that has helped both Nikki and Chad cultivate happy, efficient teams.

Nikki Martin joins the podcast! I’ve been attending Nikki’s classes at On The Mat Yoga for about a year now. Her classes never fail to disappoint and nor did this conversation. We discussed everything big and small, trivial and profound about life and how to live. I found myself at many points in the conversation where my mind was operating at the fringes of what I think I understand and reaching out into the unknown to try to piece new ideas together. We were all doing that during this dialogue. This was another one of my favourites to record. Thank you so much for all the lessons and for inviting us all into your home that wonderful Friday evening.

Be sure to catch Nikki’s classes around Halifax! She teaches at Shanti Hot Yoga in Bedford as well as On The Mat on Oxford and I’m sure I am forgetting a few others.
