Frank Shankwitz was one of the founders of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. An organization that has fulfilled over 450,000 wishes for people and youth who are ill. In this episode Frank discusses his extreme hardships being a WW2 baby, all of the incredible obstacles that he experienced, and how he overcame them. He talks about the inspiration and the construction of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the most popular wishes, and how anyone can be a hero. Unfortunately Frank passed away in early 2021, after granting 450,000 wishes he was asked what his wish was. Frank's wish was to have his story told, and for people to know that if he could do what he has done with the circumstances he was given, that anyone can. Remembering Frank Shankwitz, Founder Make-A-Wish Foundation
BLUE LIVES RADIO
The State of Policing in America: Show Host Randy Sutton dedicates this special episode of Blue Lives Radio to a true American hero who lost his battle with cancer. Frank Shankwitz, the man who created the Make-A-Wish Foundation while serving as an Arizona state trooper.
Did you know that the world-famous Make-A-Wish Foundation was started by cops? Or that the primary co-founder was an Arizona Highway Patrolman for over 40 years? His name is Frank Shankwitz and the Netflix movie “Wish Man” is all about him and his journey of self-discovery and selflessness. Join host Bret Rawson as he interviews Frank in Prescott Arizona at one of Frank’s favorite restaurants. In an era that is increasingly hostile to the men and women working America's streets as police, this peek into the heart of one of law enforcement’s heroes is both eye-opening and fascinating.
53: Frank Shankwitz: The Power of Positive Thinking
Results Radio with Shawn Shewchuk
“Try something different; there’s always a way to change something.” (click to tweet) Everyone faces hiccups and failures but it's how you chose to handle those situations that will change the course of your life. When presented with a negative, search for a way to change it to a positive. Find something about the situation that you can appreciate and avoid negative thoughts. You have to alternate your thought process and face your challenges in a different way. Approach every failure as a learning experience. This way of thinking will lead to positive actions and therefore positive outcomes. We are a reflection of the people we surround ourselves with so it’s also important to find positive people to be a part of your circle. There are many different ways to solve a problem and many different paths to get to the same place. Be open-minded and embrace the ideas of your peers. Don’t be afraid to try multiple methods and filter them out until you find a solution that works best for you. To talk about his path to positivity, I’ve brought on Frank Shankwitz. Frank Shankwitz is the co-founder of Make-A-Wish Foundation, a non-profit organization that grants life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses. He has received the President’s Call to Service Award, the Making a Difference in the World, the Making a World of Difference and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor Awards. He has also co-authored the book “Once Upon a Wish” with Rachelle Sparks. In 2019, a biographical film titled “Wish Man” was released, telling the story of Shankwitz, his life and his foundation. Frank continues to work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation as a Wish Ambassador and keynote speaker across the United States. In this episode, Frank challenges us to change the way we approach negative situations in our lives. If you can surround yourself with a positive circle of people, and push yourself to view every failure in a positive way, you will find yourself with more happiness and success. Learn how to live a more positive life, by downloading this episode now. “It’s gonna be tough but don’t give up. Keep looking, keep digging.” (click to tweet) Highlights Turn the negatives in your life into positives and learn to appreciate them. Avoid the negative people in your life and surround yourself with people that inspire you to be positive. Try a different approach, there is always a way to change the outcome. Be open to new ideas, then filter out what works for you and what doesn’t. Connect with your audience by having conversations and truly listening to what they have to say. See your failures as learning experiences. “Be a hero in somebody’s life.” (click to tweet) References Make-A-Wish Foundation Wish Man (2019)
