ASOM - Ep 84 - Markie Hageman - Countering Animal Activists

Ag State of Mind with Jason Medows

Have you ever had someone come on to one of your social media pages and make outrageous claims about you and what you do? Unfortunately I had a situation like this pop up a few weeks ago. An animal activist came to my Instagram page and made some ridiculous comments. I made a video and posted it across my social media telling about this. My friend Markie Hageman reached out to me afterward and offerred her support. That prompted me to have Markie back on the podcast to talk about how to handle these types of situations. We chat exclusively about animal activists because that is who we both have come into contact with... but the lessons within can be applied to everyone with a presence on social media. This was a very valuable conversation as Markie is an incredible asset to the industry . Check her out across social media as Girls Eat Beef Too https://www.instagram.com/girlseatbeeftoo/

She tells the story of how she grew up not involved in agriculture, but found her passion for it later in life. She talks about getting uncomfortable learning about the industry to help her understand. She has now started her own beef herd with some Hereford heifers so we know she is on the right start. Ep. 45 - Markie Hageman with Girls Eat Beef Too

That Western Life

Growing up on a horse ranch, showing sheep and pigs, Markie Hageman was a barrel racer who ran for rodeo queen contests and thoughts of agriculture and FFA never crossed her mind. A fashion merchandising major out of high school, she was planning to move to the big city of Los Angeles but that all changed in 2014 when she was named the Miss Loodlake Lions (California) Rodeo Queen and discovered the lacking gap in communication between the urban and rural divide.
