After his first ever DNF at the inaugural Cocadona 250 in 2021, Mike Turner, co-host of The Mile 99 Interview podcast and "Regular Guy Ultrarunner" stormed back into his training with a burning desire to fix what went wrong. He reinvented his entire plan, hired trainers, researched the "Ultra Lean", spoke to doctors, hit mega vert, cross-trained, dramatically changed his diet and most importantly relentlessly studied how to tackle this new distance. With trusty Sun-brella in hand, he assembled a support team with his daughter at the helm and friends of new and old to pace him along the way. From the Chaparral, Piñon, Juniper, and Ponderosa forest that surrounds Prescott, Arizona, over the sunburned cow pastures of Fain Ranch, up the rugged Mingus Mountain, through the historic towns of Jerome and Sedona, forging rivers, summiting the infamous Mount Elden, to the finish line in Flagstaff; Mike’s 108-hour journey took meticulously executing everything he had ever learned about ultrarunning. Tune in to this extra-special episode with our friend and newly-buckled Cocadona 250 finisher to hear the story of his amazing week-long adventure; Cocadona Redemption, a journey of planning, preparation, and prevention.---Your hosts: Jessica Harris / Greg Larkin / Mike Turner Intro/outro music: Joseph McDade - Elevation: https://josephmcdade.com/music/elevationThe Mile 99 Interview is creating podcast episodes | PatreonVenmo | The Mile 99 InterviewSupport the show
16. Mike Turner: Reflecting on fifty years of racing
The Sports 2000 podcast
Host Sue Stockdale talks to Mike Turner who has been involved in motorsport for many years. Mike reflects on being part of the Sports 2000 community since almost the beginning of its existence, and his career in racing. Mike Turner first attended a race meeting with his parents at 5 years old and began club racing in 1968 in a Mini Cooper S. He then progressed to Formula Ford racing a Merlyn Mk 11A competing in the British and European Championships in 1969 and 1970. Mike was studying automotive engineering when the opportunity arose to join March Engineering in 1970. During this time, Mike worked on the Formula 1 and 2 teams, which included the team winning the European Formula Two championship in 1971 with Ronnie Peterson. He later worked for a couple of other teams before starting a career in publishing, working for The Engineer magazine for thirty years. Mike started racing again, firstly in Multisports winning the championship in 1994, and then moving to Formula 2000 single seaters until 1997. In 1998 Mike started racing in Sports 2000, driving a Pinto, a Lola, and also a Shrike, where he won Class B. Mike then moved onto Duratec in the mid 2000s and has driven Van Diemen, Lola, and MCR Sports 2000 Duratec cars since then. Key Quotes‘The more you go back to a circuit, the more familiar it becomes, and you start to learn what you can do with the car.’‘I think the thing with racing cars is you're never finished with them. No matter how much time you spend in the workshop or trying to get ready, there's always something else to do.’ ‘We (the March team) won the European Formula Two championship with a guy called Ronnie Peterson. Another guy I’m sure people will have heard of was Niki Lauda who was an up and coming youth at that time, but turned out to be very, very quick.’‘We (Sports 2000) still retain the ethos of fun racing at a sensible cost.’ Leave your feedback about the podcast https://sports2000.co.uk/podcasts/The Sports2000 Championship has been established since 1977 and features four championships - Duratecs, Pintos, Historic Pintos and Mini Enduro. Car Design Podcast with MIKE TURNER | Crown Unfiltered Ep #65
Crown Unfiltered - Car Design Podcast
FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE CONTEXT ON MY GUESTS: https://www.instagram.com/crownunfiltered/ VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/7A4iM54u6LA ABOUT MIKE: Mike is a Senior Designer working for David Gordon Design LTD. He has worked professionally for over 25 years, designing everything from cars to trains, motorcycles to land speed record cars, mobile phones as well as construction machines. He has spent the past 3-4 years developing digital concepts in his spare time - largely inspired by iconic road and race cars from his youth. Recently, Mike began experimenting with an altogether more extreme modelling and visualisation technique – exploring the idea of reducing well known classic cars down to their most basic form, yet still ensuring their unique character remains recognisable. Inspired by the low-res video game graphics of his youth, Mike’s vehicles are reduced, simplified and abstracted - so that only a series of faceted polygon surfaces remain. Mike pushes hard whilst shaping his digital creations - to see how minimal he dare go without losing the spirit and key features of the original design. It’s a careful balancing act – but each is still recognisable, despite being a fraction of the original in terms of surface complexity and polygon count. In Mike’s images you still recognize the essence of a Ferrari GTO, Lamborghini Countach or LandRover Defender at first glance. Mike’s new artwork style has drawn interest on Social Media, and as a result an initial collection of 10 cars were very quickly snapped up as exclusive NFT’s via Mike’s fledgling brand Crypto-Carz. In addition to the above, Mike talked about his time in Potsdam and what it was like during its heyday. He also covered extensively his time at JCB, including the dissatisfaction he felt as the Head of Design. Last, but certainly not least, he spoke openly about struggles with mental health and the priority he now places on his well-being. Mike is still happily employed at David Gordon Limited and every time I speak to him he can't shut up about how great the company is. You should probably go and check them out - links below! I also wish to give the younger generation the opportunity to see that the people that these professionals come in different shapes and sizes and some of them will be unknown. The intention is to see that you should always be yourself and not let your job define or change who you are. Please get in contact if there is something specific you would like me to cover.
