Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo on work wifing, closing their business, and the decision whether to have kids
Bad On Paper
This is hands down one of our favorite interviews yet! Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur, founders of Of a Kind (RIP!), join us to talk about founding and running a business with your friend. We dive into how they split their roles in the business, travel styles, and hiring a management coach (AKA a business therapist). We also chat about how they’re processing the closure of their company and what’s next. Then we turn to the subject of motherhood, and have an incredibly candid conversation about how Claire grappled with whether or not she wanted children, how Erica has defended her choice not to have children, and how they’ve supported each other and stayed close despite their disparate decisions. We wrap up with some recommendations for everything from skincare to podcasts to books. More Claire + Erica: @clairemazur @ericacerulo Claireanderica.com (sign up for their newsletter here!) Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur are the coauthors of Work Wife: The Power of Female Friendship to Drive Successful Businesses. They met at the University of Chicago in 2002 and founded Of a Kind in 2010. They have become known for discovering the next big things and launched a wildly popular weekly newsletter, 10 Things, and “A Few Things,” the podcast. Their book is yet another collaboration in their already rich history of being a team of "work wives," exploring the power of female friendship to build and power successful businesses not just from their own (super interesting!) lens but from the perspective of other profitable female partnerships.
Friendships are rewarding and powerful, but they can also present some challenges that are well worth working through. We chat with author and entrepreneur, Claire Mazur, on the power of female friendships. Claire founded a successful fashion company and wrote a book with her longtime friend and shares how to have both a good personal and working relationship with a friend. She shares practical tips on how to maintain a flourishing lifelong friendship, especially as a mother. Claire and Erica are the founders of Of A Kind and the authors of Work Wife. They met in college at the University of Chicago and quickly connected over their love of fashion and discovery. 9 years ago they founded their company Of A Kind which combined the two passions that brought them together. They feature various artisans and designers and their one of a kind creations on their e-commerce platform Of A Kind. They bet big on content and invested in Tumblr, something no one else was doing at the time which got them the traction they needed to build a healthy business they eventually sold to Bed Bath & Beyond, who gave them the financial means to expand to other growth categories. They decided to write their book, Work Wife, about the importance and role their friendship played in their ability to build a scalable business. They also interview other Work Wives about the importance of maintaining friendships and professional relationships. Claire and Erica speak with first-hand knowledge about the necessity for vulnerability in the workplace and the role camaraderie plays in both effectiveness and productivity. Their story is the stuff of dreams for co-founders everywhere. Check them out on Instagram @clairemazur and @ericacerulo. You can shop Of A Kind online at ofakind.com or on Instagram @ofakind. Their book is available for purchase on Amazon and their podcast, A Few Things, is available on Apple Podcasts and online.
