What if you had a second chance at life? Brian Pennie's tips for living life on your terms

If you had a second chance at life, what would you do differently?

For this week’s Real Health, I speak to Brian Pennie, who says he shouldn’t be alive today.

With a drug addiction so bad that he was deemed too much of a risk for detox, he was determined to confront his demons and he went cold turkey at home which is when his life truly began.

After 15 years of chronic heroin addiction, he was finally clean and he discovered that he had a second chance at life.

In his book, Bonus Time, Brian tells the story of how he turned a seemingly hopeless existence into a rich and rewarding life, showing that change is always possible, no matter how stuck we feel.

Despite its trauma and turmoil, Brian’s story is incredibly empowering and inspiring and Brian also shares his five tips on living life on your terms so you too can make the most of it.

On October 8 2013, Brian Pennie experienced his first day clean after 15 years of chronic heroin addiction. Instead of perceiving his addiction as a failure, however, he embraced a second chance at life and went to university to study the intricacies of human behaviour. Since then, he has become a keynote speaker, a PhD student, a lecturer in Trinity College and University College Dublin, a life change-strategist, a radio presenter, and author of his recently published memoir, Bonus Time.

To kick off this new series, of which there will be 15 episodes that mix world class experts on anxiety in with everyday people's anxiety stories, I am joined by the incredible Brian Pennie. I don't need to give him much of an intro because his story of overcoming adversity speaks for itself. Brian is a recovered addict, he's the author of the phenomenal memoir Bonus Time and he's now undertaking a PHD, spending his time educating people on psychology and neuroscience. At the root of all of what Brian has been through, you'll find anxiety. I don't doubt that his story will resonate, he has a wonderfully realistic relationship with anxiety these days and he also has some wonderful resources available to others via his website

Enjoy and welcome back.

Writing Memoir, Making Big Decisions and Bonus Time With Author Brian Pennie

Will it make our boat go faster? That's a question Great Britain's 2000 Olympic rowing team asked itself every day prior to winning gold in Australia.

For a writer, your boat might represent writing a memoir and publishing it, landing a new client or launching a course. So when faced with a decision about to do more or less of, frame it around the boat question.

This is an idea Irishman Brian Pennie speaks about regularly. The author of Bonus Time, Pennie is also a PhD student of neuroscience, lecturer and a recovering heroin addict.

In this interview he explains:

  • How he overcame his heroin addiction
  • Why he decided to write a memoir about his painful personal story
  • How to make decisions faster
  • What his writing process looks like
  • And lots more.

I started by asking Brian how he overcame heroin and started writing a memoir.
