#104: Thoughts About Leaving Medicine with Dr Carmen Landrau
The Business of Healthcare with Tara Humphrey
Dr Carmen Landrau is a Cardiologist and a Motivational Speaker who lives in Houston, Texas. Carmen is a really good friend of mine, we met back in 2017 in California and have stayed in touch ever since. She is part of my mastermind group that provides a sounding board of like-minded people to help each other achieve their goals. Carmen joins me on the podcast today to talk about our mastermind group – what it is, how it works and how we created it. She talks about having clarity of purpose and how this is key whether it’s to do with yourself, your job, your business or your project. Carmen shares her experiences and thoughts around leaving medicine and how it’s a big decision to leave a job or career, to help anyone else in a similar situation. “It can be easy to get lost. But knowing that there are other people out there that I can relate to, people who are breaking boundaries and making it happen, who understand the struggles, that’s invaluable.” Dr Carmen Landrau This week on The Business of Healthcare: Who Dr Carmen Landrau is and how we met. Thoughts about leaving medicine. Questions to ask yourself if you are thinking of leaving a job or career. What a mastermind group is and why you need one. How a mastermind works and how to create one. The importance of having clarity of purpose. Episode 57: Becoming a Thought Leader w/Dr. Carmen Landrau
Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
SHOW NOTES: This week next level Doc Carmen Landrau and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about being a thought leader. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Landrau ● Cardiologist from Houston, Texas. Born in Puerto Rico ● Opened her solo cardiology practice 10 years ago ● Keynote speaker on women's empowerment and leadership. Speaker coach Current situation of speakers ● Speakers were used to traveling, but now due to COVID a lot of new opportunities have opened up online. Virtual events, online coaching… A lot happens when recording and behind the scenes. We are still learning as we go. MC skills ● An MC makes or breaks an event. The MC is the one on the spotlight, the one who sets the tone and pace of the event, and works hand in hand with the event planner. If there are sales in the event, the MC can negotiate getting a percentage. What is considered a thought leader? ● Not necessarily a big following, but someone who has a voice. Someone who expresses opinions that a number of people identify or leads people to think in a different way. A lot of thought leaders don’t realize they are thought leaders. ● A thought leader starts by opening people’s eyes. First, in a one-on-one conversation, then when two people are present, then a group, and then an audience. It’s a process. Thought leaders don’t grow up thinking that they want to be thought leaders, but they do want to change the world by making an impact. ● Thought leaders are not in the spotlight necessarily because they like the attention, but because they carry the huge responsibility of transmitting an important message. Thing to consider if you want to be a thought leader: ● What’s your purpose? Have it clear. ● Always keep in mind that your words have an impact, and you can influence a lot of people. ● Be responsible with your message and your mission. ● Stop for a minute and think of the best way you can transmit your message, so one gets confused. ● Believe that you are heard and that you are able to make a change. ● There's not one straight path. Know your weaknesses and work on them, and potentiate your abilities. ● You can always change your direction and advocate for something else. ● You don’t necessarily have to be in front of a big audience. You can have a blog, podcast, website, do videos, etc. ● Do what you are comfortable with, but don’t be afraid to step a bit of your comfort zone from time to time. Episode 48: Take Your Gifts to the Stage! Building a Professional Speaking Career w/Dr. Carmen Landrau
Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Carmen Landrau and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about becoming an influencer through building a professional speaking career Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Carmen Landrau ● Cardiologist and owner of Prestige Speaking and Coaching. ● Born and raised in Puerto Rico. After graduation from Kansas School of Medicine, she moved to Houston to do her residency in internal medicine and her fellowship in cardiology, both at the University of Texas. ● After graduation, she stayed with UT before opening her own practice in 2010. After a whole, she started looking into other things that could be done outside of clinical practice. In 2015, she received an email from the American Heart Association requesting people for a speaker’s bureau training. ● She then moved on to TV interviews (local and national), being the keynote speaker for the American Heart Association. After receiving an alert about a webinar for people in healthcare who wanted to be speakers, she realized this is exactly what she wanted to do. The art of being in front of people ● Being a speaker is not about not being afraid. Professional speakers get nervous too. There are a handful of things that could go wrong. We overthink things such as !AM I going to have a microphone that works?” or “I hope I don’t trip and fall!” However, the way you get rid of that is by removing yourself from the equation. ● Don’t think about your hair, or your accent, or anything else. Focus on the message you are delivering. Let that message be your whole presence. And always try to make it shine. That way YOU will shine. Keep your audience engaged. ● Find what moves you. For example, for me: speaking plays a huge part in women’s empowerment. As a female and speaker, I can use my knowledge to identify and relate to women in the audience, I can also be an effective decision-maker. And that’s what’s necessary for women to be taught: speaking up, making the decision about our careers and being able to say them out loud, make our way to not get stuck in industries or positions we don’t feel like staying for the long run. ● Don’t be afraid of following other paths. Your talent and skills are and will still be within you.
