#177 – Mastering the Lifestyle-First Approach to Indie Hacking with Daniel Vassallo

Indie Hackers

When Daniel Vassallo (@dvassallo) quit his job to become an indie hacker, he was making over $500,000 per year. It could have been a disastrous choice. Instead, less than two years later, he's built a suite of products that most founders would envy. In this episode we discuss how Daniel minimizes risk by running multiple projects simultaneously, how he turns time into a friend instead of an enemy by lowering his costs, and how a lifestyle-first business mindset can make you both richer and happier. 324. Daniel Vassallo on building - and monetizing - a Twitter following

Unleashed - How to Thrive as an Independent Professional

Daniel Vasallo left a great job at Amazon in February 2019 with the idea of working independently. He thought about building a product, but decided that he first ought to build an audience, so he set out to learn Twitter.  From a base of a couple hundred followers 18 months agao, @dvassallo now has over 44K followers. He wrote a technical book on Amazon Web Services that generated over $100K in revenue. And then he created a guide on how to build a Twitter following, "Everyone Can Build a Twitter Audience," based on his own experience - that guide has also grossed over $100K. After I spoke with Daniel I purchased his Twitter course and I recommend it.  Purchase it on Gumroad here: https://dvassallo.gumroad.com/ And do follow Daniel on Twitter at @dvassallo

Instead of being overwhelmed by all of these products, an engineering team can simplify their workflow by focusing on a small subset of AWS services–the defaults.Daniel Vassalo is the author of The Good Parts of AWS. An excerpt from the book: “The cost of acquiring new information is high and the consequence of deviating from a default choice is low, so sticking with the default will likely be the optimal choice. A default choice is any option that gives you very high confidence that it will work.” Having confidence in your workflow–even if it is a simple workflow–has advantages.S3, EC2, Elastic Load Balancers: for simple web applications, this is really all you need to build your business. Daniel Vassallo worked at AWS for more than 8 years before leaving to become an entrepreneur and author. He joins the show to talk about what the good parts of AWS are, and his strategy for building applications with that subset of services.
