TIP#18: Pre-Restorative Alignment with Dr Bharat Agrawal – What I Wish I Knew

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today.

It’s your weekly mentoring session.

Cost can be a major consideration in Dentistry. However ensuring that are we not only considering the financial costs to our patients, but also the biological costs?

This week on the podcast we are chatting again with Dr Bharat Agrawal and we are discussing a topic that he is extremely passionate about – using pre-restorative alignment to achieve conservative aesthetic outcomes. This episode will take you from only seeing ortho only as something to fix the bite, or for crowded to teeth, to starting to see its applications and benefits in almost all of your restorative patients.

Bharat fills us in on the paradigm shift from being purely a cosmetic dentist to a conservative aesthetic dentist with the patients best interest in mind. He shares with us one of his favourite tools to achieve this through orthodontics, as well some tips to help us better communicate this to our patients.

Key Tips to Takeaway for Tomorrow:

“Draw inspiration from others, but compete with yourself”

Dr Bharat Agrawal

I really loved this comment from Bharat.

I know when we graduate, and really at any point in our careers we can find ourselves looking to our peers as the yardstick for the amount and quality of dentistry we feel we should be doing. Whilst it is great to draw inspiration and standards to strive for from external sources, constant comparison and competition with others will only end up being exhausting and may steal some of the joy from your dentistry.

Today on the podcast Bharat reveals how he remembers knowing this feeling too well, but lends some excellent advice and perspective on how we can find and stick to our own path of growth in dentistry.

Key Tips to Takeaway for Tomorrow:

  • Draw inspiration from others, but compete with yourself.
  • Run your own race – don’t feel pressured to do more just because others are.
  • Critically evaluating your own work – take photos.
  • You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with -Find a good group of people around you to give you feedback.

TIP#7: The Psychology of the Aesthetic Patient with Dr Bharat Agrawal – What I Wish I Knew

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today.

It’s your weekly mentoring session.

Doing aesthetic dentistry is fun, creative and rewarding. However we’ve all had that patient that no matter what we do, we can never quite meet their expectations. The mirror is 1cm from their face, and you’re doing your 3rd provisional for them. These patients can turn a rewarding case into a draining one very quickly.

Here today on the podcast to hopefully help save us from getting ourselves into these situations,  we have Dr Bharat Agrawal. Bharat is probably someone any of us on facebook or instagram have seen or heard of before, he is a talented general dentist with a focus on aesthetics as well as a generous educator. From spending a lot of time doing aesthetic work Bharat knows that screening patients for aesthetic dental work goes beyond the clinical exam.

We had a really interesting chat delving into the topics of body dysmorphia, picking red flag patients early and some tips on which patients are great to do your first aesthetic cases on.

Key Tips to Takeaway for Tomorrow:

  • Introducing body dysmorphia
  • Red flag patients
  • Using technology and good records to be more objective
  • Its okay to say no
  • Tips for picking your first aesthetic case

NDP Episode 31: Mentorship Round Table with Prosthodontist Dr. Varun Garg and Aesthetic Dentist Dr. Bharat Agrawal

In this episode I had the great pleasure of interviewing two of my mentors and two great Australian dentists, Dr. Bharat Agrawal and Dr. Varun Garg. Dr. Agrawal is an aesthetic dentist and a multiple practice owner based out of Queensland, Australia and someone who I truly admire. He has obtained his MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry at King’s College London.  Dr. Varun Garg is a prosthodontist based out of Melbourne Australia and I was lucky enough to have him as a clinical demonstrator at Melbourne Dental School while he was doing post graduate training in prosthodontics and I was in dental student. He is a pure clinician and loves his work and I’m lucky to have him as a friend and mentor.

This episode is full of dental pearls for dental students and young dentists, we discuss avenues of clinical success, seeking out appropriate mentorship, importance of structured CPD, how to work with your local specialist and much more. I hope you guys enjoy this round table format as much as I did. I think it creates great natural conversation and produces great value packed content for you guys the listeners!
