35. Buckle Up: Timing, Driving, and Scoring Auto Racing with Legend Judy Stropus

On the Dogwatch

For a normal shift On the Dogwatch, we proceed at the measured pace of a ship under sail, looking out at the natural world, considering interesting ideas as if we were having a conversation on an evening dogwatch shift. Today, however, we ramp the speed significantly as we learn how to time things that go very fast. We visit with Judy Stropus, who is a legendary timer and scorer in the auto racing world, and has also been involved as a driver as well. She is author of the Stropus Guide to Auto Race Timing and Scoring, is a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame, and is the current Grand Marshal of Concours d’Elegance in Greenwich Connecticut. In our conversation we discuss the ways in which timing and scoring was done before the advent of electronic timers, and how Judy’s career developed both in the pit as a timer and on the track as a driver. We discuss a wide range of perspectives, including how timing and scoring is done, the place for fear on the racetrack (spoiler, there isn’t one), Judy’s friendship with Paul Newman, and her participation in what is casually referred to as the “Cannonball Run,” driving a Cadillac Limousine. So buckle up, and let’s get to our conversation with Judy Stropus.

TRE Ep 38 Judy Stropus Racing Memories

The Racing Ear Podcast

Hello again Fellow Racing Ears,In this episode, Trent, Rick, and Jeff were all onboard to have a great discussion and with the 2021 Motorsport Hall Of Fame Of America Inductee, Judy Stropus.  Judy Stropus was a pioneer in the development of timing and scoring in auto racing before racing transponders were invented.  Judy became involved in auto racing back in the early 1960's when her boyfriend was road racing in SCCA events in a Jaguar XK120.   Timing and scoring was an essential duty for a race team and Judy was able to develop her version of this necessary team duty.  Her timing and scoring skills were quickly noticed by many teams throughout the pit lane.  Later, her talents gained the attention of Roger Penske, who soon after hired her for Trans Am with Mark Donohue and later Can Am, and even later, the Indianapolis 500.It was a thrill and an honor to have Judy Stropus on The Racing Ear Podcast.  Thank you for listening to The Racing Ear Podcast!@theracingearpodcast#judystropus@rickknoopracing#jeffoldham#motorsporthalloffameofamerica#rogerpenske#markdonohue

Women Shifting Gears with Amanda Busick

Legendary professional Timer/Scorer and 2021 Motorsports Hall of Fame Inductee Judy Stropus takes host Amanda Busick for a heck of a ride through her career, spanning five decades. Judy honed her skills in the 60s and 70s, and created bulletproof results for racers in nearly every discipline. In the era before computers, she twice kept times and scores for 100 cars in a single race, tracking results entirely by hand. “All I ever wanted in my life is respect”. Judy reminisces about working with Roger Penske when women working in the pits was forbidden, why ovals are”hell!’ to score, and why the instant results of timing and scoring are so gratifying. Adrienne Barbeau may have played Judy in ‘CannonballRun’, but she would have been equally happy with Ann Margaret -- another iconic car girl!
