Emmet Kirwan is an Irish actor and playwright, best known for his 2014 play Dublin Oldschool and the 2018 movie of the same name. He is also an activist whose work has always had a political tone.

He finds this an easier way to address the social issues he wants to address. "If you have a narrative, people can’t attack that in the same way they can an individual who speaks out".

At our 2018 Social Policy Conference, Emmet sat down with Mick Clifford of the Irish Examiner for a chat that covered everything from political activism to education policy and personal debt.

Emmet Kirwan is an Irish writer, actor, poet. I heard one of his poems 'Heartbreak' on the radio recently and it stopped me in my tracks. It won the IFTA Award for Best Short Film and for me personally it is one of the most powerful pieces of art I've ever been exposed to. His play Dublin Old School which he also adapted into a feature film has been showered in awards and praise. He also wrote and starred in the Irish cult classic series Sarah and Steve. Emmet speaks so passionately and eloquently, he is a joy to listen to. I'm sure you'll know what I mean when you start listening.

As part of our Live in Lockdown series we sat down with actor, writer, poet and friend of the pod, Emmet Kirwan, for a conversation about the health of the arts in Ireland. In Emmet's own words, "It begins with art, but ends in real estate".

We were joined by an audience of tortoise shack members and Emmet kindly hung around to answer questions on his work, the arts in education, tone policing and the cost of speaking out.

This was another great evening and we have more lined up this week.

General Election 2020 promises to be a political earthquake and members of the media and political establishment are queuing up to say that "no one saw it coming." Well they mustn't have ever spoken with writer, actor and poet, Emmet Kirwan.

In this podcast, our 100th official episode, we explore that pent up desire for change and for a better society. We dive into how the Policies of Austerity have torn up the social contract and given people the courage to see through the Project Fear nonsense and we call on the Leaders of the Broad Left to make a statement of Unity before the polls open this Saturday. For our money, there is nothing more electric than Emmet Kirwan in full flow and he is in full flow here. #VoteLeft

Opening our first ever #RebootLive was a chat between Tony and writer, actor and poet, Emmet Kirwan.

Emmet, in 22 minutes, walks us through why we must expose and reject the Fine Gael Neoliberal Nightmare that sees people as economic units and instead build communities, families and strong bonds that can lift us all, not just their Golden Circle.

Collectivism and not individualism is the route.

When it comes to the crises (housing, health etc) facing this country we often turn off the general public by playing the numbers game. Well our guest, actor, writer and poet Emmet Kirwan, speaks to people where they are.

Emmet, through his work, tells the stories of Austerity that you cannot see on a spreadsheet. His play (and now film) Dublin Oldschool captures the highs and lows of the drug scene, without glamourising it.

We were energised just listening to him, you will be too.
