Stronger at 68: 7 Marathons in 7 Days – Robert Hamilton Owens : 660

Play
Read more

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest defies aging by pushing the limits of his own endurance as an athlete and adventurer well into his sixth decade. After a 20-year hiatus from competitive fitness, Robert Hamilton Owens took it up again at age 50. By age 65, he felt ready to take on five of the world’s toughest endurance events. IN. ONE. YEAR.

He competed in an 8-day race over 200 miles across Greece; a combination run/ocean swim event lasting more than nine hours; an Ironman Triathlon; seven marathons in seven days on seven continents; and a 50-hour challenge modeled after a Navy SEAL-style Hell Week.

Yet, Robert says; “I'm an average guy. And what I learned in this process was that if an average person will continue to do the right things and persevere, they'll do far more than they think they can ever do.”

In our conversation, we talk training styles, grit, toughness, and what it takes to find your “why” and keep going. That includes being vulnerable and asking for help.

“Most people will hit a natural mental ceiling,” Robert says. “Your mind is geared to protect you. You think thoughts to protect you, you don't want to be hurt. And yet to get to the places you want to go, you're going to have to go through pain; mental pain, emotional pain, relational pain, financial pain, situational pain. And you don't want pain. None of us do. But the only way to grow is to embrace that pain.”

Enjoy the show!

123: Caring for a Newborn with Dr. Robert Hamilton

Some time ago, I came across a video on Facebook in which a pediatrician was showing a hold that soothes a crying newborn. One time when my daughter was crying, and nothing seemed to help, I remembered the instructional video and gave it a try. I was amazed at the results and became an instant believer in “The Hamilton Hold.” I wondered how I could spread this message that I believe every parent needs to hear, so I’m thrilled to introduce you to today’s guest!

Dr. Robert Hamilton has written 7 Secrets of the Newborn: Secrets and (Happy) Surprises of the First Year, and has over three decades’ experience as a pediatrician. He’s the owner and founder of Pacific Ocean Pediatrics, established in 1996 in Santa Monica, CA. He is the creator of The Hamilton Hold, a method for soothing crying babies that has been seen over 30 million times on YouTube. In addition, Dr. Bob runs the LA marathon annually to support his medical mission organization which has been making annual trips to Africa and Central America for over 20 years. He’s also the proud father of six and grandpa to eight little ones. Dr. Bob lives in Santa Monica with his high school sweetheart, Leslie, to whom he has been married for 45 years.

EP27: Robert Hamilton Owens - 7 Marathons, 7 Continents, 7 Days, at Age 65!

Play
Read more

I’ve always had encouragers in my life. Mainly it was coaches. And when I was a knucklehead, there were people that would keep me on track.  And then belief...belief that you can do what people don’t think you can do..

I speak a lot of the virtues of just asking, regardless of what it is you are seeking. I asked Scott MacGregor if he would include me in his incredible anthology, “Standing O”, and he said yes, which led me to meeting today’s incredible podcast guest, Robert Hamilton Owens. Rob has been proving to himself and others that there almost no limits to what you can accomplish, regardless of age, as long as you put your mind to it.

My kid one day says “You’re pretty old at 50…” and I said “WHAT?”! I thought “You know what, I think I’ll make a comeback, and put these kids at the finish line!”  And so I did an Ironman at 50, and I found out I liked it and thought it was really fun. So I started doing it every year after that!

This past year, at the age of 65, Rob completed the World Marathon, running 7 marathons on 7 continents on successive days, and hearing his story of just getting through the first day on Antarctica will leave you truly amazed. But my friends, that only scratches the surface! Rob has been competing in the Ironman Triathlon for years, was a USAF Pararescueman, which is harder to join than the Navy Seals, Army Rangers, Green Berets etc. As he says, “We’re the ones who get sent in to rescue the other special ops servicemen!”

“Did you get your win today?” Every day you ought to have a win, and program a win. One less cigarette, one less calorie, one less anger issue. Habits develop habits and wins give confidence for more wins. It's those little steps every day to say no to something or say yes to something. I get people every day who message me and say they got a win today. “I am gaining confidence because that which used to be impossible is happening.”

It was challenging to squeeze so much accomplishment into one episode, along with tons of advice on how to be mentally and physically prepared for all obstacles, but you’ll be able to get so much out of this, give it a listen! Soon you’ll be competing in your own World Marathon Challenge, you’ll see!
