Movement Mortgage's Montell Watson on how to increase Black homeownership

HousingWire Daily

In today’s Daily Download episode, HousingWire Digital Producer Alcynna Lloyd interviews Movement Mortgage’s Director of Corporate Strategy Montell Watson about his HousingWire [PULSE] article, titled 3 ways to increase and empower black homeownership. For some background on the story, here’s what Watson had to say in the article:Over the last several months, I’ve read many articles talking about the homeownership gap for black Americans. Each article fuels me to speak with more families to bring awareness to the importance of homeownership and how owning a home can have a positive generational impact on their households. Although the current gap is staggering, I believe we have an opportunity to change the systemic long-term trust issues black households have with financial institutions while empowering all potential homeowners to believe homeownership is for them.Today, the homeownership gap for black households stands at 44%. This rate has ticked up from a recent staggering 50-year low that traces back to the passing of the Fair Housing Act. This gain is positive, but we have a long way to go. Homeownership is still one of the best ways to grow wealth and low homeownership rates in black communities has a direct correlation to net worthThis results in a lack of opportunity for home equity growth and a natural built-in savings account earned by making mortgage payments vs. a rental payment. According to “The Road to Zero Wealth” report by Prosperity Now, the median wealth of black Americans will fall to zero within 23 years if current trends continue. This is daunting. The Daily Download examines the most captivating articles reported from the HousingWire newsroom. HousingWire newsroom. Each afternoon, HousingWire provides its readers with a deeper look into the stories that are not only chronicling the biggest announcements within the housing finance industry but are also helping Move Markets Forward. Hosted by the HW team and produced by Alcynna Lloyd.HousingWire articles covered in this episode:[PULSE] 3 ways to increase and empower black homeownershipThe Urban Institute’s Alanna McCargo on black homeownership after COVID-19

Emily Breeze & Montell Watson

Date Night with Jake and Page

It's always fun when we bring on return guests. Especially when their family has doubled since you last saw them. And ESPECIALLY during a global pandemic.Emily Breeze and Montell Watson were our guests on Episode 3. THREE. This is episode 49. They've had three kids since then. Or is it 2? Wait, when was their first born again? Exactly. Who knows. When you have kids, your brain fries, and that was on display for the first couple minutes while we embarrassingly tried to figure out basic math. Interested in audio birth control? Well, we've got the episode for you!The beginning of Episode 3 is famously incredible. We won't spoil it for you, but it was in that moment we learned that Breeze don't play. Whether it be in the story she told that night, brushing off the haters on her massively-followed Instagram page or on this episode when she puts the HEAT on Montell for baby No. 4, you always know where she stands. Montell on the other hand is as cool as a cucumber. But absolutely not a push over. He's made it clear that while he's typically go-with-the-flow when it comes to life, he's definitively out on baby No. 4. (Editor's note: he's definitely going to lose that one.)Full disclosure: we're neighbors. The Watsons moved onto "the compound" late last year. We've grown closer with them and their kids since all of this madness started a couple of months ago. It's been amazing. But the last thing they probably wanted to do is record a podcast with us. "Oh, shall we hang with the Fehlings AGAIN, honey? We haven't seen them in, what, 7 minutes?" In all seriousness, though, it's all been an interesting experience to say the least. Doing life together on a compound is one thing, but quarantining together is another. Thank goodness they're not tired of us yet."Breeze" and "'Tell" are as solid as it gets. They talk raising babies, trying to figure out TikTok, navigating a dual work-from-home life, and then, right as we're signing off, Page gets IN THERE with Breeze about the role she plays as not just a social media influencer, but as an influencer to our daughter as a strong woman, mom and all-around human being. It may have gotten a little dusty in the studio at that point.Check out Breeze (@emilybreeze) and 'Tell (@montell3) all over the socials.
