SHOW NOTES

Teacher. Mentor. Strategist. Innovator. Author. All are terms you could use to identify Adam Pierno.

The highly caffeinated Pierno has refined a simple methodology to build precise strategies for numerous client campaigns. Prior to his current role as AVP of Marketing Strategy at Arizona State University's Enterprise Marketing Hub, Pierno leveraged his knowledge of consumer behavior to produce informed and effective campaigns for such national brands as Delta Air Lines, Dial Corporation, Domino’s Pizza, Dunkin' Brands and Mercedes-Benz.

His first book, “Under Think It” delves into the foundational aspects of marketing strategy. He was inspired to pen this insightful guidebook to fill a void in strategy training curriculum. That book is used to teach strategy at universities, global agencies and Fortune 100 companies. His second book, "Specific" demonstrates a model that today's brands can use to grow in an absence of viable mass media.

511 - Overcoming Fear, Saying No With Confidence, and Finding your Ideal Client with Adam Pierno

Play
Read more
Today’s guest is Adam Pierno. Adam is a speaker, author, and marketing strategist who has built a career out of helping people simplify their approach to marketing. He’s most passionate about connecting people to help them accomplish their goals.

Born out of an interest in how people think and make decisions, Adam spends a lot of time thinking about consumer culture and human behavior from both personal and commercial perspectives.

Adam began his career as an art director, and the process of writing creative briefs immediately piqued his interest in how people think. He enjoyed writing the creative briefs and getting to the primary insights of how to truly make a connection. From there, he began reading psychology books and papers, and observing what makes people tick and motivates them.

Adam spends a considerable amount of time trying to help people understand the topics he’s covered in his books. You can find Adam at various speaking engagements throughout the year and listen to his podcast, The Strategy Inside Everything.

"The fear of leaving money on the table is real, but saying no comes with the confidence of knowing that you’ve built a business and you’re doing things right. You’re good enough at what you’re doing to pass on it because something else will come through the door"
In this episode Adam talked about:
  • Why it’s important to think about human behavior and how it can drive your business forward.
  • Building and understanding customer personas.
  • Saying no with confidence.
Main Takeaways
  • At a basic level, marketing is figuring out the habit of the person that you’re trying to reach and what drives them as it relates to your brand or product.
  • Build customer personas early on. Write out what your customer looks like and what makes them different. Put a lot of thought into this exercise.
  • Send out surveys to better understand your customer’s pain points and who they are. It can lead to some pretty big results. But even without drastic changes, that kind of feedback is invaluable.

SHOW NOTES (4:31) - What is strategy? And why are people so bad at it?

Many marketers tend to use elegant words and cram way too much content into the first 20 slides of a slideshow. Yet they still get confused when their clients don’t like their creative work. Adam said, “Strategy is just about taking information and making a plan.” Complex words just confuse the client and does help not encourage trust.

(6:39) - How do you deal with the complexity of marketing?

The marketing business is always going to be complex. But this is why it is even more imperative to create simple strategies. It is unavoidable that the process will get extremely complicated, so don’t start with confusing language. Be clear and concise, it will alleviate some of the future complexity.

(15:28) - Does the additional measurement of digital create more opportunities or more problems with communicating with clients?

It depends. Some of the recent digital techniques are so new that they don’t offer any measurement. This can clients to feel doubtful. Even though the advertisements don’t have any key performance indicators (KPIs), they may still have a lot of value. Technology is changing and we no longer live in a time where you can advertise on Seinfeld and hit 95% of your target audience. Every client reacts differently so ultimately it is your job as a marketer to effectively communicate your plan.

(19:00) - How do you convey the complex aspects of marketing?

Adam tends to create flows which show the path he is trying to create. However, he would never directly show the whole flow to the client in a slide deck because they would never be able to comprehend it.

Rather, he hosts sessions to educate the client on certain aspects of advertising campaigns so it will be easier to present related concepts in the future. Even if the client doesn’t completely understand the concepts, it doesn’t really matter. They will still understand its complexity and respect your expertise.

(24:38) - Do you worry about making the strategy too simple?

It is all about how you present the information. Adam has a great strategy on how to communicate information to clients. He keeps the main slideshow barebones and does not exceed 20 slides in length. He uses these slides to explain the logic of the plan. He will then keep around 100 slides in the appendix so that if the client wants to know the specifics about research or analytics he can explain further.

It is all about the making the best use of time. Editing presentations is a skill that many marketers need to work on.

(27:13) - How do you walk a client through strategies?

Every client is different. Adam wants his strategy presentations to act as a conversation. He wants clients to ask questions and give opinions so they can build a strong foundation. This foundation will make the rest of the process much easier and efficient. Adam also recommends making the information relatable and understandable for the client. One technique he uses is to create mock target audience with backgrounds so the client can personify its target.

(34:35) - Why should people care about your book and strategy?

There are no textbooks available that can teach strategy. Adam asked many of his associates whom are in the strategy department on how to teach strategy but nobody could give an answer. He wrote ‘Under Think It’ to act as a guidebook to give steps on how to develop a strategy.

Adam Pierno finds his second act in the world of strategy

Play
Read more

This week on “Marketing Today,” Alan talks with Adam Pierno, chief strategy officer at Santy and the author of “Under Think It.” Pierno is a living, breathing example of invention and reinvention. He started on the creative side of advertising — where he was an art director and, ultimately, a creative director — before making the leap to strategy. And, when faced with a paucity of solid, comprehensive training materials for his strategy team at Santy, he wrote a book to fill the void.

In discussing his approach with the book, Pierno talks about his decision to steer away from what he calls the “jargonization of strategy” in an effort to communicate ideas powerfully and effectively. “Don’t use jargon. Use little words,” Pierno says. “People can get their heads around them. People can pick them up and do something else with them on their own…it sets people free. And that’s really what ‘Under Think It’ is all about, is how to give people your idea in a way that they can do something with it.”

Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include:

  • Pierno’s path from creative to strategy: A little bit of luck and a little bit of weird left turns. (1:20)
  • Pierno discusses the inspiration for his book, the ground it covers, and the research behind it. (5:35)
  • PowerPoint as a strategy tool: It doesn’t work; you have to give people something they can use. (18:47)
  • Beware the silos: Strategy is best when it’s woven through the fabric of an agency. (21:16)
  • How strategists should think about media. (24:20)
  • A tip for strategists: Express your hidden artist. (27:35)
  • For Pierno, seeing his dad change jobs — and thrive — made him realize that there are second acts in life. (28:49)
  • Pierno: “Brand awareness is going to make a big comeback.” (33:38)

Adam Pierno, Chief Strategy Officer at Santy and founder of Instil Strategy Training.

-Strategy has become so highbrow and academic.

- It's BS meant to insulate the people selling it.

- I believe in speaking in plain words and being direct about audiences and strategic ideas.

Change is the new normal. If you're standing still you're going backwards. Working with Mercedes-Benz and Verizon, they were still figuring out how to get an iPhone app to unlock the car doors when keys chipped to unlock the doors automatically ate their lunch.

New companies actually have an advantage in this environment because they're not locked into legacy systems, like the grocery store. Disruption is making an established brands 'advantage' into a weakness.

Nimble companies need to be flatter. Hierarchy is the enemy of speed and adaptability.

Santy is an ad agency built to guide businesses through change. Change won't stop in the marketplace; media, audiences, habits, competitors, technology. We hire people who are students of their craft and let them study the changes to show brands which can improve their business and which they can ignore.

Adam has launched a startup inside of Santy called Instil Strategy that is focused on providing strategy training to ad agencies and marketing pros.
