Exiting with class with Roderic Yapp

This week I interviewed Roderic Yapp. An ex-Royal Marines Officer who now runs his own business Leadership Forces who gave some valuable insights for service leavers.

We talked about ensuring that you exit the military with class, what it is that civilian employers will see in you as someone from a military background and, I think, most importantly about self-analysis and how it can lead to a rewarding and fulfilling career. He referenced some fantastic and very useful content that is listed below.

Lead like a Royal Marine | Roderic Yapp | Episode 97

There are no other leadership lessons which are in comparison than those which are learned on the front lines. The Royal Marines of the UK's armed forces know all too well this lesson. Military leaders are trained to think quickly, be decisive, and most importantly the importance of taking care of their soldiers. All leadership traits which apply as much in service as out of service.

Rod Yapp is a former Royal Marine Officer and the founder of Leadership Forces, a program that takes the high performance principles of the Royal Marines and applies it to leadership development. Rod has exemplified leadership on the front lines (literally) in Afghanistan and Libya and now uses that experience in order to develop leaders within organizations such as Land Rover, HSBC, and NATO.

Lead like a Royal Marine Topics

During this interview, Roderic and I discuss the following topics:

  • What the Royal Marines taught him of leadership
  • How his first bosses were great mentors
  • How subordinates can mentor a leader
  • What leadership lessons he learned from his deployments to Afghanistan and Libya
  • Mental Models which leaders can use
  • What civilian leaders can learn from military leaders

KGS153 | 4 Behaviors All Good Leaders Have In Common Which One Are You Missing with Former Royal Marine Roderic Yapp and Kingsley Grant

+++ LOOK AND SEE +++

There's a saying that I often quote to some of my clients as I help them with self-awareness, that goes like this:

"Your actions speak so loud, they can't hear what you are saying."

Have you ever heard that before?

I find that sometimes some leaders wonder why their people aren't "listening" to them. They are perplexed by it.

However, when you speak with some of the people they are leading or have the leader do a 360-assessment, it becomes apparent why.

The feedback makes it clear that the leader's behavior doesn't match what he or she is saying. It's out of sync.

How then do these leaders change the messaging of their people?

In this episode, our guest - Former Royal Marine Roderic Yapp - discusses 4 behaviors that strong and good leaders have in common. He suggests that if a leader wants to be seen as a good leader, they will adopt these 4 behaviors.

What are they?

Take a listen to find out.

Roderic is an experienced speaker, facilitator, and coach who specializes in developing leaders by changing the way people think and behave.

A former Royal Marines Officer, Yapp was fortunate enough to lead Marines on operations around the world.

One of the many highlights of his career includes the recapture of the 55,000-ton MV Montecristo from pirate control in 2011, as part of a NATO counter-piracy task force off the Somali coast.

In 2015, he founded Leadership Forces which focusses on developing leaders within organizations. His clients include HSBC, Deloitte, Jaguar, Land Rover, Rolls Royce, and Nato.

98 |Purpose, Personal Values and Resilience with Ex-Royal Marine and Entrepreneur Roderic Yapp

What do purpose, personal values, and resilience have to do with leadership? Let’s dive into it with Ex-Royal Marine Roderic Yapp.

Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • Roderic’s career in the Royal Marine and how it got him to do what he does now

  • The natural transition from military to leadership

  • How Roderic’s experiences while in the military inform the work that he does now

  • Resilience and the key to acquiring it

  • Telling the difference between what hurts and what’s painful

  • Roderic’s purpose and personal values

Key Takeaways:

  • The military is one of those few organisations out there that really understands that all they have is their people, and they really are willing to invest in them.

  • Although the military is a hierarchical organisation where an officer has the capacity to give orders and tell people what to do, by and large, it just doesn’t really work like that. It works more on the currency of trust.

  • Leadership is ultimately about improving judgment, not teaching people how to do things. It’s about empowering people to make the right decision at the right time.

  • More and more people are struggling to cope with the modern world, which calls for the need to develop resilience.

  • Leadership is done by your behaviour and the example you set.

Action Steps:

  • Ask yourself: What does a good life look like? And in your mind, work backward from there.

  • Be very clear about your purpose and personal values.

  • Invest a bit of your time to getting better tomorrow.

Roderic said:

“Leadership is all about behaviour. The behaviour is fundamentally context-dependent.”

“Comfort can be a dangerous thing. Too much comfort insulates you.”
