Welcome to season two of Speak The Speech! In this episode, Ben Elton joins James to speak about Hamlet’s speech from Act 3, Scene 2 (the very speech our podcast derives its name from). They talk about Ben's discovery of Shakespeare and theatre, his comedy series Upstart Crow, and how Shakespeare is the classic British sitcom character. Ben Elton is a multi-award-winning writer, comic, actor and director. His TV writing credits include The Young Ones, Blackadder, The Thin Blue Line and Upstart Crow. Since 1989 he's published 16 novels and written West End plays and musicals, including We Will Rock You, Love Never Dies, and a stage adaptation of Upstart Crow, which opened in London in 2020.

Ben Elton has a truly packed CV.He first launched on to the comedy scene 40 years ago, and came to fame in 1985 as he hosted the UKs Saturday Live. Since then he’s had huge success as a stand-up comic, he’s the author of 16 books and he’s written smash-hit West End plays such as We Will Rock You.And there’s the screen career: he’s written shows such as The Young Ones, The Thin Blue Line, Blackadder, as well as having written and directed two feature films.Elton was due to tour New Zealand last year with his new stand up show, but like all of 2020, it was postponed when the Covid-19 pandemic shut our borders.But he coming back, with a new tour for 2021, and it’s much bigger. Ben’s added 14 new dates to the tour and will now be performing at venues all over the country.
