Luke Tyburski - Chasing Extreme Endurance Goals To Learn About Life Balance

Primal Blueprint Podcast

Host Brad Kearns welcomes former pro soccer player turned extreme endurance athlete turned mental training coach Luke Tyburski to talk about his remarkable journey in pursuit of the limits of human endurance performance and the profound ups and downs and life-altering lessons Luke has experienced along the way.  After playing soccer at a high level in Australia and the USA, Luke plunged headlong into ultraendurance, with his first-ever running race the epic Marathon des Sables--a legendary six-day slog through the sandy Sahara Desert covering 155 miles over six days. Luke also ran 40 miles from Mt Everest base camp into Nepal despite an intestinal ailment that prevented him from eating or drinking anything for four days prior. He created his own 12-day "Ultimate Triathlon"," swimming the Gibraltar Strait (Spain to Morocco) and pedaling and running along the Mediterranean for 2,000 kilometers total. Check out the Amazon Prime documentary "The Ultimate Triathlon." Alas, these extreme efforts (and the grueling PR and logistics efforts behind the scenes) destroyed Luke's physical health and exacerbated his clinical depression. This forced him to reckon with his purpose and recalibrate on a journey of healing. Today Luke is a mental training coach for aspiring peak performances. He coaches and lectures about how to push through perceived barriers with the force of mind, while at the same time maintaining a commitment to leading a healthy, balanced life. His autobiography is called Chasing Extreme.

Own Your Success

Luke Tyburski has overcome more in his relatively short life than most of us. His dream as a child was to play professional soccer on the world stage. And he accomplished exactly that as an adult, playing in lower-level professional leagues in California, Louisiana, and the UK. But his dreams were cut short after a series of debilitating injuries. He couldn’t maintain the workload of a high-level soccer player without getting hurt. Soon, he succumbed to severe clinical depression. With no backup plan and thoughts of suicide running through his mind, Luke felt lost. But then he discovered endurance sports. Reinventing himself as an ultra-endurance adventurer, Luke started competing in the most brutal events on the plane   https://luketyburski.com/

The importance of having a purpose with Luke Tyburski

Tales to Inspire

“The one time when I believe I have been the most mentally tough, is when I talked myself off the bridge”   Luke started with a foundation given to him by his incredible parents that gave him the curiosity to think “what if I can”.   Luke always wanted to be a professional football player and ended up travelling the world pursuing his childhood dream and despite temporary success, at the age of 28 he retired from the game he loved so much. Luke’s entire purpose in life and identity surrounded itself around professional football and without that purpose he began to battle with depression.   Luke then decided that he needed something to focus on and signed himself up to run the marathon des sables, a race that consists of 6 marathons in 7 days across the Sahara desert to escape from his depression and the reality of his life. After successfully completing this daunting challenge, he went onto create his own ultimate triathlon. 2,000 km in 12 days. It began with a 24 km swim across the Gibraltar straight, followed by 1300 km bike ride and 14 marathons in 7 days. But during the training for such a successful challenge Luke found himself nearly committing suicide twice.   People now say that Luke is mentally tough for the extreme challenges he has overcome, but he says the time he was most mentally tough was when he talked himself off the bridge.     A journey of self-discovery and the importance of having a purpose, prepare to be inspired!   Resources:
